AppGen: A Software Development Revolution That Won't Happen

There's no denying that AI dramatically changes the way coders work. Generative AI tools can substantially speed up the process of writing code. Agentic AI can help automate aspects of the SDLC, like integrating and deploying code. ... Even when AI generates and manages code, an understanding of concepts like the differences between programming languages or how to mitigate software security risks is likely to spell the difference between the ability to create apps that actually work well and those that are disasters from a performance, security, and maintainability standpoint. ... NoOps — short for "no IT operations" — theoretically heralded a world in which IT automation solutions were becoming so advanced that there would soon no longer be a need for traditional IT operations at all. Incidentally, NoOps, like AppGen, was first promoted by a Forrester analyst. He predicted that, "using cloud infrastructure-as-a-service and platform-as-a-service to get the resources they need when they need them," developers would be able to automate infrastructure provisioning and management so completely that traditional IT operations would disappear. That never happened, of course. Automation technology has certainly streamlined IT operations and infrastructure management in many ways. But it has hardly rendered IT operations teams unnecessary.

One of the most common pain points? Mismatched expectations. “Gen Z wants transparency—they want to know the 'why' behind decisions,” Kaushal explains. That means decisions around promotions, performance feedback, or even task allocation need to come with context. At the same time, Gen Z thrives on real-time feedback. What might seem like an eager question to them can feel like pushback to a manager conditioned by hierarchies. Add in Gen Z’s openness about mental health and wellbeing, and many managers find themselves ill-equipped for conversations they’ve never been trained to have. ... There is a growing cultural narrative that managers must be mentors, coaches, culture carriers, and counsellors—all while delivering on business targets. Kaushal doesn’t buy it. “We’re burning people out by expecting them to be everything to everyone,” he says. Instead, he proposes a model of shared leadership, where different aspects of people development are distributed across roles. “Your direct manager might help you with your day-to-day work, while a mentor supports your career development. HR might handle cultural integration,” Kaushal explains. ... New AI model offers faster, greener way for vulnerability detection

Unlike LLMs, which can require billions of parameters and heavy computational power, White-Basilisk is compact, with just 200 million parameters. Yet it outperforms models more than 30 times its size on multiple public benchmarks for vulnerability detection. This challenges the idea that bigger models are always better, at least for specialized security tasks. White-Basilisk’s design focuses on long-range code analysis. Real-world vulnerabilities often span multiple files or functions. Many existing models struggle with this because they are limited by how much context they can process at once. In contrast, White-Basilisk can analyze sequences up to 128,000 tokens long. That is enough to assess entire codebases in a single pass. ... White-Basilisk is also energy-efficient. Because of its small size and streamlined design, it can be trained and run using far less energy than larger models. The research team estimates that training produced just 85.5 kilograms of CO₂. That is roughly the same as driving a gas-powered car a few hundred miles. Some large models emit several tons of CO₂ during training. This efficiency also applies at runtime. White-Basilisk can analyze full-length codebases on a single high-end GPU without needing distributed infrastructure. That could make it more practical for small security teams, researchers, and companies without large cloud budgets.

‘Subliminal learning’: Anthropic uncovers how AI fine-tuning secretly teaches bad habits

Distillation is a common technique in AI application development. It involves training a smaller “student” model to mimic the outputs of a larger, more capable “teacher” model. This process is often used to create specialized models that are smaller, cheaper and faster for specific applications. However, the Anthropic study reveals a surprising property of this process. The researchers found that teacher models can transmit behavioral traits to the students, even when the generated data is completely unrelated to those traits. ... Subliminal learning occurred when the student model acquired the teacher’s trait, despite the training data being semantically unrelated to it. The effect was consistent across different traits, including benign animal preferences and dangerous misalignment. It also held true for various data types, including numbers, code and CoT reasoning, which are more realistic data formats for enterprise applications. Remarkably, the trait transmission persisted even with rigorous filtering designed to remove any trace of it from the training data. In one experiment, they prompted a model that “loves owls” to generate a dataset consisting only of number sequences. When a new student model was trained on this numerical data, it also developed a preference for owls.

It turns out, however, that chaos is not ultimately and entirely unpredictable because of a property known as synchronization. Synchronization in chaos is complex, but ultimately it means that despite their inherent unpredictability two outcomes can become coordinated under certain conditions. In effect, chaos outcomes are unpredictable but bounded by the rules of synchronization. Chaos synchronization has conceptual overlaps with Carl Jung’s work, Synchronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle. Jung applied this principle to ‘coincidences’, suggesting some force transcends chance under certain conditions. In chaos theory, synchronization aligns outcomes under certain conditions. ... There are three important effects: data goes in and random chaotic noise comes out; the feed is direct RTL; there is no separate encryption key required. The unpredictable (and therefore effectively, if not quite scientifically) unbreakable chaotic noise is transmitted over the public network to its destination. All of this is done at the hardware – so, without physical access to the device, there is no opportunity for adversarial interference. Decryption involves a destination receiver running the encrypted message through the same parameters and initial conditions, and using the chaos synchronization property to extract the original message.

Lean Agents: The Agile Workforce of Agentic AI

Organizations are tired of gold‑plated mega systems that promise everything and deliver chaos. Enter frameworks like AutoGen and LangGraph, alongside protocols such as MCP; all enabling Lean Agents to be spun up on-demand, plug into APIs, execute a defined task, then quietly retire. This is a radical departure from heavyweight models that stay online indefinitely, consuming compute cycles, budget, and attention. ... Lean Agents are purpose-built AI workers; minimal in design, maximally efficient in function. Cloud Repatriation Is Harder Than You Think

Repatriation is not simply a reverse lift-and-shift process. Workloads that have developed in the cloud often have specific architectural dependencies that are not present in on-premises environments. These dependencies can include managed services like identity providers, autoscaling groups, proprietary storage solutions, and serverless components. As a result, moving a workload back on-premises typically requires substantial refactoring and a thorough risk assessment. Untangling these complex layers is more than just a migration; it represents a structural transformation. If the service expectations are not met, repatriated applications may experience poor performance or even fail completely. ... You cannot migrate what you cannot see. Accurate workload planning relies on complete visibility, which includes not only documented assets but also shadow infrastructure, dynamic service relationships, and internal east-west traffic flows. Static tools such as CMDBs or Visio diagrams often fall out of date quickly and fail to capture real-time behavior. These gaps create blind spots during the repatriation process. Application dependency mapping addresses this issue by illustrating how systems truly interact at both the network and application layers. Without this mapping, teams risk disrupting critical connections that may not be evident on paper.


AI Agents Are Creating a New Security Nightmare for Enterprises and Startups

The agentic AI landscape is still in its nascent stages, making it the opportune moment for engineering leaders to establish robust foundational infrastructure. While the technology is rapidly evolving, the core patterns for governance are familiar: Proxies, gateways, policies, and monitoring. Organizations should begin by gaining visibility into where agents are already running autonomously — chatbots, data summarizers, background jobs — and add basic logging. Even simple logs like “Agent X called API Y” are better than nothing. Routing agent traffic through existing proxies or gateways in a reverse mode can eliminate immediate blind spots. 7 lessons I learned after switching from Google Drive to a home NAS

One of the first things I realized was that a NAS is only as fast as the network it’s sitting on. Even though my NAS had decent specs, file transfers felt sluggish over Wi-Fi. The new drives weren’t at fault, but my old router was proving to be a bottleneck. Once I wired things up and upgraded my router, the difference was night and day. Large files opened like they were local. So, if you’re expecting killer performance, make sure to look out for the network box, because it perhaps matters just as much  ... There was a random blackout at my place, and until then, I hadn’t hooked my NAS to a power backup system. As a result, the NAS shut off mid-transfer without warning. I couldn’t tell if I had just lost a bunch of files or if the hard drives had been damaged too — and that was a fair bit scary. I couldn’t let this happen again, so I decided to connect the NAS to an uninterruptible power supply unit (UPS).  ... I assumed that once I uploaded my files to Google Drive, they were safe. Google would do the tiring job of syncing, duplicating, and mirroring on some faraway data center. But in a self-hosted environment, you are the one responsible for all that. I had to put safety nets in place for possible instances where a drive fails or the NAS dies. My current strategy involves keeping some archived files on a portable SSD, a few important folders synced to the cloud, and some everyday folders on my laptop set up to sync two-way with my NAS.


5 key questions your developers should be asking about MCP

Despite all the hype about MCP, here’s the straight truth: It’s not a massive technical leap. MCP essentially “wraps” existing APIs in a way that’s understandable to large language models (LLMs). Sure, a lot of services already have an OpenAPI spec that models can use. For small or personal projects, the objection that MCP “isn’t that big a deal” is pretty fair. ... Remote deployment obviously addresses the scaling but opens up a can of worms around transport complexity. The original HTTP+SSE approach was replaced by a March 2025 streamable HTTP update, which tries to reduce complexity by putting everything through a single /messages endpoint. Even so, this isn’t really needed for most companies that are likely to build MCP servers. But here’s the thing: A few months later, support is spotty at best. Some clients still expect the old HTTP+SSE setup, while others work with the new approach — so, if you’re deploying today, you’re probably going to support both. Protocol detection and dual transport support are a must. ... However, the biggest security consideration with MCP is around tool execution itself. Many tools need broad permissions to be useful, which means sweeping scope design is inevitable. Even without a heavy-handed approach, your MCP server may access sensitive data or perform privileged operations


Firmware Vulnerabilities Continue to Plague Supply Chain

"The major problem is that the device market is highly competitive and the vendors [are] competing not only to the time-to-market, but also for the pricing advantages," Matrosov says. "In many instances, some device manufacturers have considered security as an unnecessary additional expense." The complexity of the supply chain is not the only challenge for the developers of firmware and motherboards, says Martin Smolár, a malware researcher with ESET. The complexity of the code is also a major issue, he says. "Few people realize that UEFI firmware is comparable in size and complexity to operating systems — it literally consists of millions of lines of code," he says. ... One practice that hampers security: Vendors will often try to only distribute security fixes under a non-disclosure agreement, leaving many laptop OEMs unaware of potential vulnerabilities in their code. That's the exact situation that left Gigabyte's motherboards with a vulnerable firmware version. Firmware vendor AMI fixed the issues years ago, but the issues have still not propagated out to all the motherboard OEMs. ... Yet, because firmware is always evolving as better and more modern hardware is integrated into motherboards, the toolset also need to be modernized, Cobalt's Ollmann says.

Alternative clouds are on the rise

Alt clouds, in their various forms, represent a departure from the “one size fits all” mentality that initially propelled the public cloud explosion. These alternatives to the Big Three prioritize specificity, specialization, and often offer an advantage through locality, control, or workload focus. Private cloud, epitomized by offerings from VMware and others, has found renewed relevance in a world grappling with escalating cloud bills, data sovereignty requirements, and unpredictable performance from shared infrastructure. The old narrative that “everything will run in the public cloud eventually” is being steadily undermined as organizations rediscover the value of dedicated infrastructure, either on-premises or in hosted environments that behave, in almost every respect, like cloud-native services. ... Making security and development co-owners of DevSecOps

In my view, DevSecOps should be structured as a shared responsibility model, with ownership but no silos. Security teams must lead from a governance and risk perspective, defining the strategy, standards, and controls. However, true success happens when development teams take ownership of implementing those controls as part of their normal workflow. In my career, especially while leading security operations across highly regulated industries, including finance, telecom, and energy, I’ve found this dual-ownership model most effective. ... However, automation without context becomes dangerous, especially closer to deployment. I’ve led SOC teams that had to intervene because automated security policies blocked deployments over non-exploitable vulnerabilities in third-party libraries. That’s a classic example where automation caused friction without adding value. So the balance is about maturity: automate where findings are high-confidence and easily fixable, but maintain oversight in phases where risk context matters, like release gates, production changes, or threat hunting. ... Tools are often dropped into pipelines without tuning or context, overwhelming developers with irrelevant findings. The result? Fatigue, resistance, and workarounds.

AI That Thinks Like Us: New Model Predicts Human Decisions With Startling Accuracy

“We’ve created a tool that allows us to predict human behavior in any situation described in natural language – like a virtual laboratory,” says Marcel Binz, who is also the study’s lead author. Potential applications range from analyzing classic psychological experiments to simulating individual decision-making processes in clinical contexts – for example, in depression or anxiety disorders. The model opens up new perspectives in health research in particular – for example, by helping us understand how people with different psychological conditions make decisions. ... “We’re just getting started and already seeing enormous potential,” says institute director Eric Schulz. Ensuring that such systems remain transparent and controllable is key, Binz adds – for example, by using open, locally hosted models that safeguard full data sovereignty. ...  The researchers are convinced: “These models have the potential to fundamentally deepen our understanding of human cognition – provided we use them responsibly.” That this research is taking place at Helmholtz Munich rather than in the development departments of major tech companies is no coincidence. “We combine AI research with psychological theory – and with a clear ethical commitment,” says Binz. “In a public research environment, we have the freedom to pursue fundamental cognitive questions that are often not the focus in industry.” 


Collaboration is Key: How to Make Threat Intelligence Work for Your Organization

A challenge with joining threat intelligence sharing communities is that a lot of threat information is generated and needs to be shared daily. For already resource-stretched teams, it can be extra work to pull together, share a threat intelligence report, and filter through the incredible volumes of information. Particularly for smaller organizations, it can be a bit like drinking from a firehose. In this context, an advanced threat intelligence platform (TIP) can be invaluable. A TIP has the capabilities to collect, filter, and prioritize data, helping security teams to cut through the noise and act on threat intelligence faster. TIPs can also enrich the data with additional contexts, such as threat actor TTPs (tactics, techniques and procedures), indicators of compromise (IOCs), and potential impact, making it easier to understand and respond to threats. Furthermore, an advanced TIP can have the capability to automatically generate threat intelligence reports, ready to be securely shared within the organization’s threat intelligence sharing community Secure threat intelligence sharing reduces risk, accelerates response and builds resilience across entire ecosystems. Google study shows LLMs abandon correct answers under pressure, threatening multi-turn AI systems

The researchers first examined how the visibility of the LLM’s own answer affected its tendency to change its answer. They observed that when the model could see its initial answer, it showed a reduced tendency to switch, compared to when the answer was hidden. This finding points to a specific cognitive bias. As the paper notes, “This effect – the tendency to stick with one’s initial choice to a greater extent when that choice was visible (as opposed to hidden) during the contemplation of final choice – is closely related to a phenomenon described in the study of human decision making, a choice-supportive bias.” ... “This finding demonstrates that the answering LLM appropriately integrates the direction of advice to modulate its change of mind rate,” the researchers write. However, they also discovered that the model is overly sensitive to contrary information and performs too large of a confidence update as a result. ... Fortunately, as the study also shows, we can manipulate an LLM’s memory to mitigate these unwanted biases in ways that are not possible with humans. Developers building multi-turn conversational agents can implement strategies to manage the AI’s context. For example, a long conversation can be periodically summarized, with key facts and decisions presented neutrally and stripped of which agent made which choice.

Autonomy in the absence of organizational alignment can cause teams to drift in different directions, build redundant or conflicting systems, or optimize for local success at the cost of overall coherence. Large organizations with multiple engineering teams can be especially prone to these kinds of dysfunction. The promise of aligned autonomy is that it resolves this tension. It offers “freedom within a framework,” where engineers understand the why behind their work but have the space to figure out the how. Aligned autonomy builds trust, reduces friction, and accelerates delivery by shifting control from a top-down approach to a shared, mission-driven one. ... For engineering teams, their north star might be tied to business outcomes, such as enabling a frictionless customer onboarding experience, reducing infrastructure costs by 30%, or achieving 99.9% system uptime. ... Autonomy without feedback is a blindfolded sprint, and just as likely to end in disaster. Feedback loops create connections between independent team actions and organizational learning. How To Build a Software Factory

Of the three components, process automation is likely to present the biggest hurdle. Many organizations are happy to implement continuous integration and stop there, but IT leaders should strive to go further, Reitzig says. One example is automating underlying infrastructure configuration. If developers don’t have to set up testing or production environments before deploying code, they get a lot of time back and don’t need to wait for resources to become available. Another is improving security. Though there’s value in continuous integration automatically checking in, reviewing and integrating code, stopping there can introduce vulnerabilities. “This is a system for moving defects into production faster, because configuration and testing are still done manually,” Reitzig says. “It takes too long, it’s error-prone, and the rework is a tax on productivity.” ... While the software factory standardizes much of the development process, it’s not monolithic. “You need different factories to segregate domains, regulations, geographic regions and the culture of what’s acceptable where,” Yates says. However, even within domains, software can serve vastly different purposes. For instance, human resources might seek to develop applications that approve timesheets or security clearances. Managing many software factories can pose challenges, and organizations would be wise to identify redundancies, Reitzig says.

After all, if each service can be tested in isolation and you’re growing your engineering team alongside your services, why wouldn’t the testing effort scale linearly? ... Mocking strategies that work beautifully at a small scale become maintenance disasters at a large scale. One API change can require updating dozens of mocks across different codebases, owned by different teams. ... Perhaps the most painful scaling challenge is what happens to shared staging environments. With a few services, staging works reasonably well. Multiple teams can coordinate deployments, and when something breaks, the culprit is usually obvious. But as you add services and teams, staging becomes either a traffic jam or a free-for-all — and both are disastrous. ... The teams that successfully scale microservices testing have figured out how to break this exponential curve. They’ve moved away from trying to duplicate production environments for testing and are instead focused on creating isolated slices of their production-like environment.

Traditional distributed computing assumes computation can be co-located with data, minimizing network traffic—a principle that has guided system design since the early days of cluster computing. But transformer architectures require frequent synchronization of gradient updates across massive parameter spaces—sometimes hundreds of billions of parameters. In order for passwords to work as a part of the authentication process, the website, app, or other service -- collectively referred to as the "relying party" -- must keep a record of that password in its end-user identity management system. The process is the same, whether or not the password on record is encrypted. In other words, with passwords, before you can establish a login, you must first share your secret with the relying party. New York passes a bill to prevent AI-fueled disasters

“The window to put in place guardrails is rapidly shrinking given how fast this technology is evolving,” said Senator Gounardes. “The people that know [AI] the best say that these risks are incredibly likely […] That’s alarming.” The RAISE Act is now headed for New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s desk, where she could either sign the bill into law, send it back for amendments, or veto it altogether. If signed into law, New York’s AI safety bill would require the world’s largest AI labs to publish thorough safety and security reports on their frontier AI models. The bill also requires AI labs to report safety incidents, such as concerning AI model behavior or bad actors stealing an AI model, should they happen. If tech companies fail to live up to these standards, the RAISE Act empowers New York’s attorney general to bring civil penalties of up to $30 million. The RAISE Act aims to narrowly regulate the world’s largest companies — whether they’re based in California (like OpenAI and Google) or China (like DeepSeek and Alibaba). The bill’s transparency requirements apply to companies whose AI models were trained using more than $100 million in computing resources (seemingly, more than any AI model available today), and are being made available to New York residents.

3 reasons I'll never trust an SSD for long-term data storage

SSDs rely on NAND flash memory, which inevitably wears out after a finite number of write cycles. Every time you write data to an SSD and erase it, you use up one write cycle. Most manufacturers specify the write endurance for their SSDs, which is usually in terabytes written (TBW). ... When I first started using SSDs, I was under the impression that I could just leave them on the shelf for a few years and access all my data whenever I wanted. But unfortunately, that's not how NAND flash memory works. The data stored in each cell leaks over time; the electric charge used to represent a bit can degrade, and if you don't power on the drive periodically to refresh the NAND cells, those bits can become unreadable. This is called charge leakage, and it gets worse with SSDs using lower-end NAND flash memory. Most consumer SSDs these days use TLC and QLC NAND flash memory, which aren't as great as SLC and MLC SSDs at data retention. ... A sudden power loss during critical write operations can corrupt data blocks and make recovery impossible. That's because SSDs often utilize complex caching mechanisms and intricate wear-leveling algorithms to optimize performance. During an abrupt shutdown, these processes might fail to complete correctly, leaving your data corrupted.

If we categorise and label things and explain what experiences lead us to our gut feeling, then we have the option of checking our bias and assumptions, and can help others to develop the thinking structures to make their own decisions, she explained ... Schladebeck recommends that leaders narrate their thoughts to reflect on, and describe their own work to the ones they are leading. They can do this by asking themselves questions like, "Why do I think that?", "What assumptions am I basing this on?", "What context factors am I taking into account?" Look for patterns, categories, and specific activities, she advised, and then you can try to explain these things to others around you. Currently, the AI assistance that users receive is deterministic; that is, humans are expected to enter a command in order to receive an intended outcome. Who needs real things when everything can be a hologram?

Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said recently on Theo Von’s “This Past Weekend” podcast that everything is shifting to holograms. A hologram is a three-dimensional image that represents an object in a way that allows it to be viewed from different angles, creating the illusion of depth. Zuckerberg predicts that most of our physical objects will become obsolete and replaced by holographic versions seen through augmented reality (AR) glasses. The conversation floated the idea that books, board games, ping-pong tables, and even smartphones could all be virtualized, replacing the physical, real-world versions. Zuckerberg also expects that somewhere between one and two billion people could replace their smartphones with AR glasses within four years. One potential problem with that prediction: the public has to want to replace physical objects with holographic versions. So far, Apple’s experience with Apple Vision Pro does not imply that the public is clamoring for holographic replacements. ... I have no doubt that holograms will increasingly become ubiquitous in our lives. But I doubt that a majority will ever prefer a holographic virtual book over a physical book or even a physical e-book reader. The same goes for other objects in our lives. I also suspect both Zuckerberg’s motives and his predictive powers.

With the mystique fading, enterprises are replacing large prompt-engineering teams with AI platform engineers, MLOps architects, and cross-trained analysts. A prompt engineer in 2023 often becomes a context architect by 2025; data scientists evolve into AI integrators; business-intelligence analysts transition into AI interaction designers; and DevOps engineers step up as MLOps platform leads. Legal scholars point out that this split could not be more consequential, as it directly affects how courts across the country treat compelled access to devices that contain vast troves of personal, private, and potentially incriminating information. What’s at stake in the Brown decision goes far beyond criminal law. In the digital age, smartphones are extensions of the self, containing everything from personal messages and photos to financial records, location data, and even health information. Unlocking one’s device may reveal more than a house search could have in the 18th century, and the very kind of search the Bill of Rights was designed to restrict. If the D.C. Circuit’s reasoning prevails, biometric security methods like Apple’s Face ID, Samsung’s iris scans, and various fingerprint unlock systems could receive constitutional protection when used to lock private data. That, in turn, could significantly limit law enforcement’s ability to compel access to devices without a warrant or consent. Moreover, such a ruling would align biometric authentication with established protections for passcodes.

Mind the Gap: AI-Driven Data and Analytics Disruption

The Holy Grail of metadata collection is extracting meaning from program code: data structures and entities, data elements, functionality, and lineage. For me, this is one of the most potentially interesting and impactful applications of AI to information management. I’ve tried it, and it works. I loaded an old C program that had no comments but reasonably descriptive variable names into ChatGPT, and it figured out what the program was doing, the purpose of each function, and gave a description for each variable. Eventually this capability will be used like other code analysis tools currently used by development teams as part of the CI/CD pipeline. Run one set of tools to look for code defects. Run another to extract and curate metadata. Someone will still have to review the results, but this gets us a long way there. ... Large language models can be applied in analytics a couple different ways. The first is to generate the answer solely from the LLM. Start by ingesting your corporate information into the LLM as context. Then, ask it a question directly and it will generate an answer. Hopefully the correct answer. But would you trust the answer? Associative memories are not the most reliable for database-style lookups. Imagine ingesting all of the company’s transactions then asking for the total net revenue for a particular customer. Why would you do that? Just use a database.
