⚙️ Engineering Insight: Fatigue Assessment of a Wind Turbine Shaft When AH Gears Ltd, specialists in precision gear manufacturing and gearbox services, needed to validate the design of a low-speed wind turbine shaft, they turned to Matrix for advanced fatigue analysis. 🔍 The Challenge The addition of service hatchways in the shaft raised concerns about potential fatigue failure under cyclic loading. Even with low nominal stress in the selected region, stress concentrations around the hatchway design posed a serious risk. 💡 The Solution Using MSC Patran, MSC Nastran and MSC Fatigue, Matrix modelled the shaft and assessed the fatigue life of different hatchway designs. The initial rectangular cutout produced unacceptable stress levels. After iteration, a circular cutout design with equivalent working area was tested and proved to deliver a satisfactory fatigue life. ✅ The Result The redesign ensured the shaft could meet fatigue requirements, providing a safer and more reliable solution for wind turbine operation.
