Using less material as an industry is fundamental to reducing emissions 📉 On Three Chamberlain Square at Paradise Birmingham, a lean post-tensioned concrete structural frame and an innovative off-site prefabrication approach to drylining helped reduce material use and emissions. By opting for post-tension slabs and utilising high-strength steel strands rather than an increased quantity of rebar, the amount of steel was reduced by 45-50%, while the thinner slabs reduced concrete use ✅ As a result, the project achieved an embodied carbon result of just 449 kgCO2e/m2 (A1- A5), an exceptionally low figure for an entirely new building, along with BREEAM Outstanding and NABERS 5* accreditations 🌟

Huge congratulations to Align JV on reaching structural completion of the Colne Valley Viaduct for HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd 🥳 The UK’s longest railway viaduct at 2.1 miles (3.4km) long, it will carry trains at speeds of up to 200mph across a series of lakes and waterways on the north west outskirts of London. Since the bridge's deck completed in September 2024, the Finishes team have been hard at work installing four-metre high noise barriers, four miles of robust kerb with over 3,600m3 of concrete poured and a high-performance waterproofing membrane. It closely follows last week's completion of the Chiltern Tunnel, with both set to become iconic features of HS2. A fantastic effort from Align JV and supply chain partners made possible through no shortage of engineering excellence and a collaborative project team 👏 Align is the joint venture of Bouygues Travaux Publics, VolkerFitzpatrick Ltd and Sir Robert McAlpine.

When it comes to conserving resources, we apply the old adage of ‘waste not want not’ on our projects ✅ We work to design out any waste on projects, maximising material efficiency, and champion the use of modern methods of construction and offsite manufacture. Our pre-demolition audits allow us to deconstruct a building and ‘urban mine’ the materials which we can reuse again. It means we can salvage more and more materials, extending their life and reducing consumption 🤝 At 100 Liverpool Street, 32% of the steel frame was retained and reused from the existing building, saving 3,435 tonnes of carbon. 49% of the concrete foundations and concrete floor slabs were retained and reused from the existing building, including 100% of the foundations, saving 4,086 tonnes of carbon 🙌

Kudos to the Integrated Heath Projects (IHP) team, the joint venture between VINCI Building UK and Sir Robert McAlpine, and our supply chain partners delivering the National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) on giving back to the local communities around Loughborough and making a significant positive social impact through a number of initiatives. They have made donations totalling almost £60,000 and volunteered hundreds of hours, from refurbishing a wellbeing centre and installing energy efficient lighting in schools, to mentoring young people and supporting local charities. Their efforts and dedication are a powerful reminder of what it means to build with purpose. The NRC will be run by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust when it opens to patients later this year and aims to transform rehabilitation in the UK. 🎉 Huge congratulations to our colleagues at Align JV on reaching a phenomenal milestone for HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd: the completion of the Chiltern Tunnel ahead of schedule! The five-year programme involved construction of the 10-mile tunnel, the longest on the HS2 route, the South Portal porous portal structures and accompanying earthworks trace. This achievement marks a major step forward in delivering one of the UK’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.
