Construction of the Colne Valley Viaduct complete ✅ 👏 🎉 We are delighted to confirm that we have completed construction of the Colne Valley Viaduct, the UK’s longest railway viaduct at 2.1 miles (3.4km) long! Recognised for its sweeping curve across land and water, the Colne Valley Viaduct (CVV) will carry trains running to and from the capital of speeds of up to 200mph/h (320km). In September 2024 the last of 1,000 giant concrete pre-cast segments used to build the structure’s deck was fitted into place by the 160m-long Launching Girder, Dominique. Weighing up to 140 tonnes and made on site, each one was uniquely shaped to achieve the viaduct’s curve. Following behind the Launching Girder have been our CVV Finishes teams. Their works began in 2023 and included installation of the robust kerb with over 3,600m3 of concrete poured, the installation of 1514 parapets, the high-performance waterproofing membrane protected by a 100mm thick steel fibre reinforced slab, 41,000 troughs placed by mechanical means and lids placed by hand! As well as the 4m high noise barriers on each side of the viaduct, internal drainage system and structural health monitoring systems. There’s no denying that the design and construction of the viaduct was a huge technical challenge for the team at Align JV, however this team lived up to that challenge. Thanks to unrivalled expertise, operating as an integrated project team and embracing collaboration, this team with the support of their supply chain have safely delivered what will undoubtedly become an iconic feature of HS2. Construction of Chiltern Tunnel complete ✅ 👏 🎉 It is with great pride we announce that we have completed construction of the 10-mile Chiltern Tunnel, the longest tunnel on the HS2 route, the South Portal porous portal structures and the accompanying earthworks trace. Works began at the South Portal, the launch site for our TBMs Florence and Cecilia, in 2020. With Florence commencing her journey in spring 2021, followed shortly after by Cecilia. Since the breakthroughs of the TBMs at the North Portal in early 2024, the team have been finishing the 38 cross passages and 5 adits, the strip out of services and slurry pipes, slip-forming the emergency walkways, completing construction of the south Porous Portals and constructing the crossover slabs and drainage for the train track. It has been an incredible 5 years since civil works began, from innovations and awards to record-breaking mining and historic breakthroughs. Throughout it all our values and integrated project team have remained at the core. Today our team came together to recognise this milestone moment on the HS2 Ltd programme.
