🔋♻️ Australia’s first dedicated Battery‑in‑Device Shredding (BIDS) plant has launched in Melbourne's north – supported by a $2 million grant from Sustainability Victoria, on behalf of the Victorian Government. Until now, everyday items with built‑in batteries – like electric toothbrushes, wireless headphones, toys, and yes, vapes – often ended up in kerbside bins or landfill. That created fire risks and wasted valuable materials that could have been recovered. This new facility changes that. Devices collected through existing drop‑off points will now be processed onshore in an enclosed, water‑based shredding system operated by EcoCycle (ANZ) that safely handles embedded batteries, and recovers over 90% of valuable materials for reuse. At full capacity, it will be able to process over 8,000 tonnes of devices each year. Victoria’s Minister for Environment, Steve Dimopoulos MP, officially opened the facility, joined by Sustainability Victoria CEO Matt Genever to mark this milestone for Victoria’s circular economy. Congratulations to EcoBatt (ANZ) EcoCycle (ANZ) and the Victorian Government on the opening of Australia’s first Battery-in-Device Shredding (BIDS) plant. At Gloyd Recycling Solutions, we are proud of the BIDS technology (www.bidsgrp.com), the partnership with EcoCycle (ANZ), and the real-world impact it has had on one of the fastest-growing waste and fire safety challenges of our time. This milestone proves what is possible when industry and government align around practical solutions: safer processing of hidden batteries, higher recovery of critical materials, and stronger infrastructure to support the circular economy. We look forward to continuing to expand BIDS globally and advancing the safe recovery of batteries in vapes, phones, tools, and all the devices that too often end up in landfills or cause fires in the waste stream. The Campbellfield facility is a benchmark moment-well done to all involved in bringing it to life. -Gloyd Recycling Solutions www.gloydrecycling.com www.bidsgrp.com Jeff Gloyd #EcoBatt #EcoCycle #BatteryRecycling #CircularEconomy #BIDSPlant #BatteriesInDevices #VapeWaste #GloydRecycling
Today we held the official opening for the nation’s first Battery-in-Devices Shredding (BIDS) Plant in Campbellfield, Melbourne — a groundbreaking solution to one of the fastest-growing waste challenges of our time. From vapes and power tools to phones, toys, wearables and more, hidden batteries are everywhere. When thrown in the bin, they can spark fires, cause explosions causing harm to our environment. Our new facility safely processes these batteries and recovers over 90% of valuable materials for reuse, setting a new benchmark for battery safety and recycling infrastructure in Australia. Supported by Sustainability Victoria through the Victorian Government’s Circular Economy Infrastructure Fund, and unveiled by The Hon Steve Dimopoulos MP, Minister for Environment, alongside EcoCycle (ANZ) Group CEO Doug Rowe, the BIDS Plant demonstrates what is possible when industry and government work together for real solutions. This is more than just new technology; it’s about creating a safer, more sustainable future. Battery-containing devices pose serious risks when mishandled. They are starting fires. The National Stewardship Action Council is sounding the alarm and rightfully so. Disposable vapes and battery-containing devices end up in the wrong streams, causing fires, risking worker safety, and contaminating the environment. It’s not a small problem. It’s a growing one. At Gloyd Recycling Solutions, we designed the BIDS system (Battery-In-Device Shredder) www.bidsgrp.com to address this challenge directly. BIDS safely shreds entire battery-containing devices like vapes, earbuds, and phones in a fire-mitigated, emissions-tested system that cleanly separates valuable outputs like copper, lithium, black mass, and plastics. No disassembly. No fire risk. No landfill. Strategic Fit. National Stewardship Action Council provides the policy and regulatory reasoning. The BIDS system delivers the practical, technology-driven infrastructure to execute safe recovery of lithium batteries at scale. Together, this represents real alignment between demand-side policy and supply-side capability. That’s exactly what’s needed to close the loop on hard to manage consumer devices. As legislation like AB 762, Jacqui Irwin, and SB 501, Ben Allen, and SB 1250 CalRecycle https://lnkd.in/gbjjv6_G drives extended producer responsibility and take-back mandates, the market needs more than intention. It needs execution. BIDS is ready. Special thanks to Heidi Sanborn, MPA, for continuing to speak out with urgency and clarity about the need for solutions. 🔗 www.BIDSgrp.com Jeff Gloyd #BatteryRecovery #CircularEconomy #EPR #FireRisk #LithiumIon #EwasteSolutions #RightToRecycle #BIDS #GloydRecycling #NSAC #ProductStewardship #VapeWaste #CaliforniaLegislation #EnvironmentalJustice
With more than 12 million single-use vapes sold each month in the U.S., these battery-embedded products are being improperly discarded—causing fires at recycling facilities, hazardous waste contamination, and major financial strain on local governments. At the 49th Annual California Resource Recovery Association Conference & Trade Show National Stewardship Action Council and Stewardship Action Foundation Executive Director Heidi Sanborn, MPA will speak on the Vape Waste Panel, highlighting how Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) can shift the burden off taxpayers and onto manufacturers through smart, enforceable policy. 💨 Up In (Vape) Smoke: Hazardous Waste, Fire Risk, Policy Barriers 📅 Tuesday, August 5 🕐 4:30 – 6 PM This panel brings together four leading voices to unpack: Legislative efforts to ban disposable vapes How EPR can fund safe vape collection and disposal The fire risks and infrastructure damage from lithium-ion batteries Needed regulatory reform to allow schools and e-waste programs to safely collect vapes If you're attending CRRA, don’t miss this timely conversation—and look for opportunities to connect with Heidi Sanborn next week as NSAC continues to lead on circular solutions for hazardous waste. RTÉ News highlights the rising threat of battery-related fires in WEEE Ireland WEEE Forum recycling. This is not unique to Ireland. Across Europe and the United States, waste and recycling facilities are facing increasing fire incidents caused by common consumer electronics such as vapes, earbuds, laptops, phones, and power tools. Additional Article: https://lnkd.in/eYYpa4wv The challenge is that most existing battery recovery systems were designed for large EV battery packs, not the smaller, embedded batteries driving day-to-day thermal incidents. As a result, many devices are being stockpiled or landfilled due to the lack of safe, scalable processing options. The BIDS system (Battery In Device Shredder) was developed to meet this exact need. BIDS is the first commercially available solution that safely shreds battery-containing devices without manual disassembly. Using a fully enclosed, water-based shredding process, BIDS neutralizes thermal events and separates plastics, metals, and black mass for recovery. It fits within a standard 40-foot container, does not require special permitting, and is ready to deploy. Key milestones: First unit delivering to Australia Three additional systems are in production Emissions testing complete Independent validation of material recovery performance Growing interest from recyclers across the EU and beyond Learn more or request a demo at www.bidsgrp.com Jeff Gloyd #BatteryRecycling #WEEE #FirePrevention #RecyclingTechnology #MaterialRecovery #BlackMass #CircularEconomy #SafeRecycling #EPR #Sustainability #CleanTech #BIDS

California’s SB 1215 is reshaping the industry's approach to battery-embedded electronics. As other states follow, BIDS www.bidsgrp.com is built for this challenge and more. Starting January 1, 2026, consumers in California will pay a recycling fee at the point of sale on electronics with non-removable batteries. This legislation is designed to reduce fire risks, protect workers, and ensure safe, sustainable disposal. https://lnkd.in/gbjjv6_G Key compliance dates: By July 1, 2025: Manufacturers must notify retailers of covered products By October 1, 2025: CalRecycle will set the recycling fees By January 1, 2026: Fee collection and product labeling begin Why this matters and why BIDS is different: California is just the beginning. Other states are actively evaluating or implementing similar legislation focused on batteries in devices and extended producer responsibility. The direction is clear. BIDS was not built to solve a single regulation but to prepare the industry for a safer and more sustainable future. BIDS (Battery In Device Shredder) is the industry’s first commercial system engineered specifically for safe, high-throughput processing of battery-containing devices. It directly addresses two of the biggest issues in electronics recycling: fire hazards and manual disassembly constraints. For recyclers, OEMs, and ITAD providers, BIDS: •Eliminates manual battery removal for most devices •Reduces fire risk through sealed and controlled processing •Recovers valuable materials for resale •Ensures regulatory readiness through traceable battery destruction •Fits easily into existing infrastructure and operations Let’s connect Jeff Gloyd Whether you're preparing for a specific state's rollout or thinking bigger about long-term safety and compliance, BIDS is the scalable infrastructure solution the industry has been waiting for.
