We will never forget Sergeant Nicole L. Gee, USMC. Nicole was raised in Roseville, California, before she joined the Marine Corps in 2017. She was clearly a cut above the rest, evident by her meritorious promotion to Sergeant while deployed to Kuwait on August 2, 2021, just a few weeks before she passed away. Today marks the fourth anniversary of the terrorist attack at Abbey Gate, in Kabul, Afghanistan where 13 brave U.S. service members, including Nicole, made the ultimate sacrifice during the U.S. military's withdrawal from Afghanistan. Our District 1 Supervisor, Bonnie Gore, cemented our community's commitment by presenting a proclamation, that August 26th is a Day of Remembrance for Sergeant Nicole Gee and the Abbey Gate 13. The presentation was made just as this morning's storm lifted, at the corner of Nicole Gee Drive in Roseville, CA. Our Board of Supervisors recently placed the H.T. Holmes Company Lime Kiln in Colfax onto the county’s historic registry. Local geologist Jim Wood re-discovered the kiln, built in 1903, after the 2021 River Fire burned thick brush and blackberry vines that covered it. Now, he has a goal to build a historic trail. Limestone from the Colfax quarry was used in major construction projects such as the United States Mint building in San Francisco, and some decorative pieces on the historic Placer County Courthouse. The kiln was used to burn down quarry stones into lime, which is used in construction materials, paint and many other uses.

What a 'ruff' day in our Board chambers today! September is National Service Dog Month in Placer County. Service dogs provide vital assistance to people with disabilities and are active partners in our own community, including with first responders and agencies supporting vulnerable residents. The Board of Supervisors marked the occasion with a proclamation; pictured are members of Canine Companions® and various county staff.

Placer County Animal Services program manager Katie Ingram has joined an elite group of animal welfare professionals — just 352 individuals worldwide — by earning the Certified Animal Welfare Administrator (CAWA) designation. The CAWA credential is known for its high professional standards and rigorous exam process. It’s the gold standard in the field, and we’re proud to have Katie bringing that standard to Placer County. In addition, Katie also recently joined the CalAnimals (California Animal Welfare Association) Board, representing Placer at the state level.
