Port Houston employees came together for a company-wide volunteer event with the Houston ToolBank. Teams from Turning Basin Terminal, Barbours Cut and Bayport Container Terminals volunteered to build 16 picnic tables and 6 garden beds. These were donated to community organizations including the 5th Ward Community Redevelopment Center, Finca Tres Robles, Houston Botanic Garden, and Holland Middle School. This effort aligns with Houston ToolBank’s ongoing work to enhance outdoor spaces at schools and nonprofits. As a 2024 Port Houston Community Grant recipient, they’re creating lasting impact, and we were excited to help bring that vision to life. The TS Kennedy, the current training ship of Texas A&M Galveston (TAMUG) Maritime Academy, made its final homeward-bound stop at our Bayport Container Terminal layberth last week. Originally operated by Massachusetts Maritime Academy, the Kennedy is one of the few steam-powered training vessels still in service. It has been in use by TAMUG Maritime cadets for summer cruises which usually involve more than 300 cadets and 5 port calls. Cadets engage in projects, take classes, and gain practical experience on how to serve onboard a vessel. Ahead of the sail to Texas A&M University at Galveston, some of our Bayport operations staff, many of whom are proud Aggie alumni, toured the vessel with Captain Wade Howell and shared how their own maritime training helped shape their careers at Port Houston. This marks the last summer the Kennedy will sail under TAMUG. Next year, cadets will train aboard the TS State of Maine in partnership with Maine Maritime, before returning to our docks in 2027 aboard their new MARAD-assigned vessel, TS Lone Star State. Thank you to the TS Kennedy crew for the warm welcome aboard and for continuing to shape the next generation of mariners.
