“Clarifying the difference between emissions trading schemes and voluntary carbon markets is crucial for India’s net-zero journey. Emissions trading schemes issue government-backed allowances that must be retired against compliance obligations, while voluntary carbon markets issue credits for verified, operational projects like renewable energy or carbon sequestration. Many countries struggle to transition between the two, but examples like California and the UK show how successful integration can drive real impact. “India is taking key steps toward integrating its carbon market with the international system, focusing on Article 6.2 and 6.4 under the Paris Agreement. While 6.2 covers direct trading of carbon credits between countries and companies, including agreements like the one signed with Japan, 6.4’s rules are still unclear to many. Once finalised, 6.4 will enable broader global participation and clearer market mechanisms. “Amid evolving global dynamics marked by volatility, shifting alliances, and energy transition imperatives, India faces a complex energy security landscape. Historically centered on supply scarcity, the focus has now shifted to ensuring affordability and reliability despite sufficient global availability. With high import dependencies, nearly 88–89% for oil and increasing reliance on gas and coal, India has diversified its energy sources beyond the Middle East, including imports from Russia and the U.S. However, price volatility, limited strategic reserves, and infrastructure constraints remain critical challenges. "Marking 10 years of Make In India, CII–PwC launched a report “Manufacturing for India & the World” which highlights India’s rapid emergence as a global hub for renewable energy manufacturing, with growing capabilities in solar modules, wind turbine components, batteries, electrolyzers, and transmission technologies. A session on the theme emphasised strategies to scale domestic manufacturing to meet rising global demand while boosting export potential across the clean energy value chain. Strengthening MSMEs, especially in critical transmission equipment like transformers and switchgear, was identified as key. Aligning with international quality standards, leveraging trade agreements, and enhancing competitiveness in global supply chains remain priorities through policy support, industrial infrastructure, and supply chain resilience will be essential to drive an export-oriented renewable manufacturing ecosystem."
