The Stevens School of Business was proud to recently host an event celebrating Professor Emeritus Edward Friedman’s 90th birthday and the publication of his latest book, Nuclear Energy: Boom, Bust, and Emerging Renaissance (Oxford University Press)! Professor Friedman's extraordinary 60-plus year journey at Stevens Institute of Technology began in 1963 as a physics professor. As Dean of the College from 1973-86, he transformed undergraduate education and helped make Stevens the first college in the U.S. to require all students to own a computer in 1982, a visionary move that positioned us as pioneers in technology-integrated learning. In 2000, he earned the title Doctor Honoris Causa in Mathematical Sciences, along with the Honorary Blue Ribbon Insignia from Sofia University in Bulgaria. The distinguished list of recipients of this honorary title include Exarch Joseph I – Honorary Master of Law, 1902; Ivan Vazov – Doctor Honoris Causa in Slavic Philology and Literature, 1920; Prof. G.H. Hardy, University of Cambridge – Doctor Honoris Causa in Mathematical Sciences, 1939; Nikola Tesla – Doctor Honoris Causa in Physical Sciences, 1939; and Umberto Eco – Doctor Honoris Causa in Philological Sciences, 1990. His global impact extends far beyond our Hoboken campus: 🏆 Fulbright Fellow (1992) 🌍 Key contributor to developing Kabul University's College of Engineering (1970) 📚 Board member of the American University of Bulgaria 🔬 Ongoing advocate for innovative K-12 STEM education At 90, Professor Friedman continues to inspire with his latest work on nuclear energy's role in addressing climate challenges. His dedication to education, innovation and international collaboration embodies the Stevens spirit of technological leadership and global impact. Here's to a true Stevens pioneer whose legacy spans generations of students and continues to shape the future! #StevensBusiness #StevensInstituteOfTechnology #StevensPride #Innovation #NuclearEnergy #GlobalImpact

Rejection is necessary to maintain quality in open knowledge collaboration, but it can also discourage new contributors from returning. This creates a critical tension between upholding standards and sustaining participation. New research from School of Business Associate Professor Aleksi Aaltonen and Fox School of Business at Temple University Associate Dean for Research and Doctoral Programs Sunil Wattal studied how rejections are communicated matters. They found that explaining why a contribution was declined increased new contributor retention by 21.7%. Instead of walking away, more contributors tried again. Explore their research to see how rejection done correctly, through small, low-cost changes, can strengthen collaboration: https://lnkd.in/eJ8sY-RV #OpenKnowledgeCollaborationSystems #OpenSource #Rejection #StevensBusiness #StevensInstituteOfTechnology #StevensPride GJ de Vreede

Maryan Shepetyuk decided crossing the Atlantic Ocean was his best chance to cross the Hudson River. The latest graduate of our dual degree program with Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale (UPO) to make the short trip from Hoboken to Goldman Sachs. “The Italian system strengthened my analytical thinking and theoretical understanding, while the U.S. education emphasized practical problem-solving, communication and adaptability,” he says.
