TYPES OF COMPUTER
There are main seven types of
computer.
Personal computer (desktop)
Mobile Computers or devices
Game consoles
Servers
Mainframes
Super computers
Embedded computers
PERSONAL COMPUTERS
PERSONAL COMPUTER
 Personal computers are also known as desktop or
microcomputers.
 It contains a processors ,memory and a storage
device and one or more input and output devices.
POPULAR MANUFACTURERS
 Popular manufacturers of desktop computers are
 Apple
 Sony
 Dell
 Hp
USES OF
 Personal computers are used for many purposes
like;
 Entertainment
 Home budgeting
 Playing games
 Communication purposes
MOBILE COMPUTERS
MOBILE COMPUTERS
It is a type of computers that you
can carry them anywhere with
yourself
They are small enough in size to
hold in hand
EXAMPLES
Examples of mobile computers
include:
Smart phones
Laptops
Notebooks
Tablets
ebooks
FAMOUS MANUFACTURERS
Famous manufacturers of mobile
devices are:
 Samsung
 Nokia
 Apple
 Lenovo
 Oppo
 dell
GAME CONSOLES
GAME CONSOLES;
 It is a mobile computing device designed for
playing games
 Can used by single player or multiplayer for playing
video games
GAME CONSOLES
 A standard game console consist of following units:
 A handheld controller (as input)
 A screen (as output)
 Hard disk ,optical disk, memory card (for storage)
SERVERS
SERVER
 A server controls access to hardware, software and
other resources on network and provides a
centralized storage area for programs, data, and
information
USES OF SERVER
 Servers can support from two to several thousands
connected computers at same time
 In many cases ,one server access data , programs
and information on another server
 In other cases, people use personal computers or
terminals to access data, information and other
programs on server
MAINFRAMES
It is a large, expensive ,powerful
computer that can handle thousands
of connected users simultaneously.
It stores termondous amounts of data
,instructions and information
They are so powerful and quite
expensive.
It is accamodated in large air
conditioned rooms because of its size.
USES OF MAINFRAMES
 With mainframes, enterprises are able to bill
millions of customers , prepare payroll for
thousands of employees , and manage thousands
of items in inventories.
 Most major corporations use mainframes for
business activities.
 Banks ,insurance companies, educational
institutions use mainframes for storing data of their
clients, students and insurance policy holders.
POPULAR MAINFRAMES
 Fujitsu’s ICL VME
 Hitachi’s Z800
SUPER COMPUTERS
SUPER COMPUTERS
 The most powerful computers in terms of
performance and data processing are the
Supercomputers.
 The supercomputers are very expensive and very
large in size. It can be accommodated in large air-
conditioned rooms; some super computers can
span an entire building.
 They are capable of processing more than one
quadrillion instructions in a second
USES OF SUPERCOMPUTERS
 Supercomputers are used to study the origin of the
universe, the dark-matters.
 Supercomputers are used to study the Earthquakes
phenomenon.
 Supercomputers are used for natural resources
exploration, like natural gas, petroleum, coal, etc.
 Supercomputers are used for weather forecasting,
and to study the nature and extent of Hurricanes,
Rainfalls, windstorms, etc.
 Supercomputers are used to run weapon simulation
that can test the Range, accuracy & impact of
Nuclear weapons.
 In Pakistan Supercomputers are used by
Educational Institutes like NUST for research
purposes. Pakistan Atomic Energy commission &
Heavy Industry Taxila uses supercomputers for
Research purposes.
POPULAR SUPERCOMPUTERS
 IBM’s Sequoia, in United States
 Fujitsu’s K Computer in Japan
 IBM’s Mira in United States
 IBM’s SuperMUC in Germany
FIRST SUPER COMPUTER
 Seymour Cray designed the first Supercomputer
"CDC 6600" in 1964. CDC 6600 is known as the
first ever Supercomputer.
EMBEDDED COMPUTERS
EMBEDDED COMPUTERS
 It is a special purpose computer that functions in a
large device as a small part of it.
 They performs various functions depending on the
requiremint of product in which they reside.
 They are small in size and have limited hardwares.
USES OF EMBEDDED COMPUTERS
 They are present in printers, photocopiers
machines
 They are used in remote controls , digital wrist
watches etc.
