The European Union Satellite Centre provides geospatial intelligence services and analyzes earth observation data to support EU policymaking and operations. With increasing amounts of data from new satellite constellations and sources like social media, the Centre aims to use big data and artificial intelligence techniques like machine learning and computer vision to automate analysis and improve detection of irregular activities. Adapting workflows to leverage big data, GIS, and partnerships will help the Centre meet growing demands and support security and humanitarian goals.

UNCLASSIFIED/FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY European Union Satellite Centre © 2017 UNCLASSIFIED/FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY 10 Artificial Intelligence as an essential leverage Not programming computers anymore but showing them examples • Large quantities of examples • High computation performances necessary Machine learning is based on mathematics, probabilities and statistics. 2 flavors: • supervised (you know what your samples mean), applications: classification, detection, regression • unsupervised (you want to make sense of the meaning of your samples), applications: clustering, anomaly detections Define an approximation function between inputs and expected outputs by learning parameters through large datasets
