• An important communicative process
• A complex communicative process of receiving and
interpreting the written word
• The most important language skill required for academic and
professional purposes
• Reading is concerned with four factors: decoding,
comprehending, text analysis and response
READING PROCESS
• Decoding-the reader reads letters and focuses on them in
order to change the coded message into information
• Comprehending-the reader interprets the message and
understand its literal meaning
• Text analysis response-the reader critically examines and
evaluates the message
• And responds to the message
READING SPEED
•Extensive reading is done to broaden our general
understanding of a text
•Intensive reading is to get an in-depth knowledge
and to understand the finer details of a subject
•In order to improve reading efficiency, reading
speed has to be increased
•Reading speed is measured in words per minute
(wpm)
PURPOSE OF READING
• To get an introductory idea of a text
• To get a broader understanding of the subject matter
• To understand scientific ideas, theories and principles
• To obtain specific information
• To understand new changes and developments in a particular
field
• To broaden one’s outlook and understanding
• To discover the author’s viewpoints
• To seek evidence for one’s own point of view

READING SKILLS
In order to become an active and efficient readers, different strategies and
skills are required:
• vocabulary skills
• visual perceptual skills
• rapid reading skills and
• intensive reading skills
Eye Reading and Visual Perception
1. Visual perception is a basic requirement for reading
effectiveness because we recognize a word through sight.
2. Inaccurate visual perception may lead to visual misreading and
lack of comprehension
3. It may also lead to confusion and misunderstanding.
4. To improve eye reading skills:
5. Develop faster eye fixations
6. Read in word groups
7. Improve accurate visual perception of words and phrases
8. Avoid vocalization and sub- vocalization
9. Rapidly recognize word meaning
10. Concentrate while reading
Scanning Skills
Scanning refers to the ability to locate specific information or facts
as quickly as possible which provides better comprehension
It serves several purposes like:
• A specific point or fact in a text
• Relevant graphic details
• A formulae or a word
• Train or television schedules
• Examination results or notes at the end of a text
• A word in a dictionary
• Any questions/remarks/notes at the end of a text
• Any references or bibliographical listings
It is important to increase scanning speed with accuracy.
Scanning Skills
To increase proficiency at scanning :
• Know want you want to find-determine the purpose
• Do not read everything-focus on the information needed
• Use guides and aids-to identify what is required
• Know the organization of the material to be read-to
analyse the way information is structured
• Concentrate while scanning-must have the urge to read
and identify the required information
Skimming Skills
• Skimming is the process of reading a text or passage to get a
rough idea of what it is all about….
• It is a rapid reading technique that prepares a reader for
detailed reading
• The main objective of skimming is to understand the central
and main points of a text
• It involves fast reading and quick analysis
• It also involves discovering the purpose, organization and
identifying the writing patterns of a text
• Skimming is essential for better understanding of a text

Scanning= Particular Information
Intensive Reading= Understanding the text in detail
Extensive Reading= For Data / Pleasure
