Editor's Notes

  • #2: Topic: Europeana and User Generated Content An overview Aubery will later present our WWI project in detail What are our plans for UGC? Europeana Awareness and Europeana Education, two possible future projects with UGC-aspects How do they relate to our strategy? What do we at Europeana include in the rather vague concept “UGC”?
  • #3: Strategic strand: Aggregate Relates to UGC because: We harvest user created content from institutional providers, eg.: The Great War Archive Portable Antiquities Scheme Culture Schock We will harvest user created content from our own WWI project We use Dbpedia to semantically enrich our metadata We plan to use Dbpedia/Wikipedia articles to contextualise search results
  • #4: Strategic strand: Facilitate Relates to UGC because: We can play an advocacy role Many GLAMs are still uncertain as to the risks&rewards of UGC We can help share knowledge and best practises Like this workshop!
  • #5: Strategic strand: Distribute Relates to UGC because: We aim to develop partnerships with open communities to distribute content and metadata Like Wikimedia Commons partnerships Or a cite this object in Wikipedia function We already include and plan to include more UGC in our portal, exhibitions and thus in our Search API and Linked Open Datasets Note: All content generated in our own WWI project is openly licensed
  • #6: Strategic strand: Engage (our major strategic strand concerning UGC!) Relates to UGC because: Conversing with our users and making it possible for them to enrich our repository is crucial for engagement On Europeana platforms, like the portal Off Europeana platforms, like on Facebook So the rest of the presentation focuses mostly on our Engagement plans And, don’t worry, we know what a cliched term Engagement is but we have to call it something!
  • #7: What do we mean by UGC? Participation, Co-ownership, Sharing, Conversation, Dialogue, Co-creation, Re-use, Exploring, Connecting, Contextualisation, Questioning, Relationships
  • #8: More concretely, by UGC we mean: Content - digital objects with metadata, singular or re-combined items Example: The World War I project Annotations – additions in the form of tags links and comments to objects, can be translations of existing metadata Examples: Semantic tagging of items in the portal, Comments on items in exhibitions Translations – translations of editorial texts and system messages/user interfaces Example: Crowdsourced translation of the portal user interface and portal editorial texts Curation – re-grouping, contextualisation and re-publications of existing content User created galleries Conversation – actually talking with people Facebook page, Blog, Twitter
  • #9: User Created Content From institutional partners through regular harvesting Great War Archive, Portable Antiquities Scheme, Culture Schock. Future improvements is to make it possible to filter on user created content in portal searches and to more clearly and visually mark them as user created. From our own “The First World War in Everyday Documents”-project Aubery will present this project in detail later If we receive funding for Europeana Awareness and Europeana Education, from the Wikimedia Community and from educators Already this year we will sponsor the WikiLovesMonuments project and this may entail showcasing some of the results on Europeana platforms. Exact nature of our involvement is to be decided
  • #10: User created annotations Semantic tagging in the portal Building on the YUMA toolsuite, re-purposed from media annotation to metadata record annotation. Comments in the virtual exhibitions Building on an Omeka add-on
  • #11: Crowdsourced translations Of user interfaces and systems messages Of editorial texts Currently this is done by volunteers within the Europeana network of GLAMs. We want to extend this group outside of GLAMs.
  • #12: User Created Curation Embed item function For integration on personal blogs User created galleries For selecting, annotating and embedding multiple Europeana items If we get funding for Europeana Awareness, a prototype Europeana Storytelling Platform
  • #13: Conversation Blog Facebook Twitter Social objects Custom made conversation pieces We use these channels to encourage conversation e..g in the form of storytelling about favourite items in Europeana That we then can include in e.g. virtual exhibitions
  • #14: Most images courtesy of Biblitoheque Municipale de Lyon via Europeana The artists: Slide 8: Theophile Alexandre Steinlen Slide 7: André Louis Armand Rassenfosse Slide 9: Andrew Penfield Slide 1: Jules Cheret Slide 11: Kolo Moser Slide 12: George Henri Meunier Slides 6, 10: Unknown artists Slides 2-5 are taken from the Europeana Strategic Plan
