Bus Karo Plus is a program by EMBARQ India that aims to establish best practices and enable peer learning for public transport providers in Indian cities. It discusses challenges faced by bus companies in Mumbai and Delhi in expanding fleets due to lack of land for depots and terminals, and highlights how BMTC in Bangalore developed 38 depots and 50 bus terminals through long-term land banking. It also describes driver training programs for fuel efficiency in Andhra Pradesh and feeder bus services provided by BEST in Mumbai. Talking Transit I – Land Banking to Develop Terminal & Depots BEST (4500 buses) and DTC (6500 buses) – bus companies in Mumbai and Delhi have not been able to increase their fleet due to lack of land for depots and terminals. Meanwhile BMTC had doubled it’s ridership from 2.5 Million to 5 Million and buses from 3500 to 6500 in the last 10 years. BMTC has 38 depots and 50 February, 2012 bus terminals that were developed through a long 80 Participants – 15 Cities term land banking strategy.

Talking Transit II – Driver Training & Fuel Efficiency Driver turned trainer Mohammed Hanif of Andhra Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (APSTRC) demonstrates the simulator they built to help drivers to visualize the link between stepping on the gas pedal and fuel injection. APSRTC reports one of the highest fuel efficiency standards in the country >5 kmpl Industry standard is 3 kmpl. August, 2012 60 Participants – 18 Cities

Talking Transit III – Feeder Service & Short Route Design Feeder bus services are designed to pick up passengers in a certain locality, and take them to a transfer point where they make an onward journey on a trunk service either by another bus, or a rail based service such as a tram, rapid transit or train. - #3: MoUD came up with a funding scheme and expected them to operate the buses. A lot of cities which had govt companies had prior knowledge of bus operations, but many were getting buses for the first time – they got the buses, but didn’t know what to do with them. That’s where the original Bus Karo guidebook came in handy.
