What is Information Technology (IT) ?
1. Information technology (IT) is the use of any computers, storage,
networking and other physical devices, infrastructure and processes to
create, process, store, secure and exchange all forms of electronic data.
2. IT includes several layers of physical equipment (hardware), virtualization
and management or automation tools, operating systems and applications
(software) used to perform essential functions.
3. Business applications include databases like SQL Server, transactional
systems such as real-time order entry, email servers like Exchange, Web
servers like Apache, customer relationship management and enterprise
resource planning systems. These applications execute programmed
instructions to manipulate, consolidate, disperse or otherwise affect data
for a business purpose.
Solution overview
Organizational Needs & IT Strategy
• Revenue Pilferage – make on board ticketing cashless
• Ticketing convenience – make ticket available to the customer at his / her
convenience - websites, mobile phones, counters.
• Payment convenience – allow multiple secure payment options -cards, net
banking, cash
• Green Initiative - ticket in electronic format & Clear printed ticket
Travel information – Timetables and expected time of arrival / departure – Display
& Announcements
• Operations Control – monitor regularity & punctuality, unscheduled operations
• Passenger Safety & Security – monitor unauthorized halts & over speeding,
• Disaster management & 24 x 7 helpline – SOS information in disaster / distress –
accident / breakdown / holdup
• Potentials for Incremental Revenue - advertisements on displays / public address
systems / ticket rolls
Tremendous amount of data.
• Each commuter buys a ticket during each single journey
• DTC operates a fleet of 4344 (3781 LF 563 SF) buses as on date
• It involves …… 23.50 Lac numbers of tickets sold daily
• It involves …… 9600 numbers of duties running daily
• It involves …… 555 odd number of routes operated daily
• It involves …. Operation in 3 shifts
• It involves … 40,000 numbers of trips daily
• It involves … 7000 numbers of bus stops in the city/ NCR
• It involves …… 13,000 numbers of drivers
• It involves ……. 14,000 numbers of Conductors
Status of IT projects in DTC
• CCTV Camera in 200 buses has been installed in Nov. 2014.
• Work of implementation of Automated Fare Collection System (AFCS)
using Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETMs) & Smart Cards, in the full
fleet of DTC has been awarded through Global Tendering to M/s
Trimax IT Infrastructure & Services Ltd, Mumbai. Pilot in two depots
viz. Rohini-1 and Rajghat-1. The project is expected to be rolled out in
the whole fleet by June 2016.
• For installation of GPS based Vehicle location system DIMTS was
engaged by the Transport Dept. since 3rd March 2010. The solution
proposed by DIMTS did not work. So now it has been decided to
invite fresh tenders for implementation of the GPS+CCTV+WIFI in
buses.
• On experimental basis WIFI is also installed in the six buses of DTC by
the different vendors as a pilot.
Other IT applications in DTC
• Biometric Attendance System.
• Human Resource Management System (HRMS)
• Payroll and Online Monitoring System of the daily Out shedding of
buses from all the depots are in house developed IT systems.
Information Technology in Public Transport
Focusing on Role of IT in Public Transport specific area,
broadly, IT in Public Transport can be utilized for:
A. Better Monitoring, enhanced efficiency of the Transport
Corporation.
B. Security & Safety of Commuters.
C. Facilitating travelling commuters.
Data on Various parameters
• Using Automated fare collection system through Electronic ticketing
machines and usage of smart cards through validators, huge data on
following parameters can be captured:
• Duty wise revenue,
• Route wise revenue,
• Conductor wise revenue,
• Heavy boarding points,
• Heavy alighting points,
• Duty wise KMs.,
• Route wise KMs,
• Driver wise KMs
• Average time taken during operation of route etc.
Monitoring and Analysis of Data
• Performance of routes
• Performance of duties
• Performance of Crew
• Performance of Depot
• Performance of Region
• Overall Performance of the Corporation.
• Bus wise performance.
• Route wise performance
Remedial steps to enhance performance
• Once we have comparative reports for analysis in hand then Best and
Worst performing routes, duties, crew members, depots and regions,
and poorly performing ones can be identified and can take remedial
measures like:
• Fine tuning of Route by focusing on heavy points
• Fine tuning of timings of trips
• Motivation of staff
Security of commuters
• Available technologies.
• CCTV Cameras
• Global Positioning System (GPS)
CCTV in buses
• CCTV Cameras facilitate surveillance of area inside and to some
extent, outside the buses.
• Can help identify miscreants and criminals inside the buses and
control crime rate.
• Can help in Accidents analysis.
• Can help monitoring crew habits and attentiveness on duty.
• Proper Parking of buses at bus stops.
GPS based Vehicle Monitoring System
• GPS is known for its ability to inform position of vehicle on
which it is installed.
• Public Transport can use it for monitoring its fleet for
adherence of schedule given to vehicles and observe
deviations.
• Capture mileage actually operated.
• Stoppage/ Non-stoppage of vehicles at designated bus
stops.
Role of GPS in Public Transport
• Enable Public Information System like:
– LED Boards
• Inside buses for displaying name of coming stop.
• At bus stops for displaying ETA of coming buses.
– Voice Announcement Systems
• Inside the buses to announce name of coming stop.
– Online Information about buses movement (ETA)
• Through websites
• On Mobile Phones
Facilitating Commuters
• Usage of Smart Cards would help in solving currency change
problem.
• In case of crime, a bus can be identified by GPS.
• Safe & secured travelling under CCTV Camera surveillance.
• Reduced waiting time and uncertainty for the passengers by providing
accurate arrival timings of buses, through displays at Bus
Shelters/Stations and through Internet.
• Providing SMS based query facility about arrival times to enable them
to plan their journey better.
Benefits to corporation
• Improve operational efficiency.
• Reduce the operational costs.
• Optimize of routes/trips using the MIS data from the system.
• Increase earnings by retaining/attracting clientele.
• Effective tracking of off-route vehicles.
• Improve schedule adherence.
• Increase passenger trips, capital savings (potential reductions in fleet size
due to better utilization of vehicles)
• Enhance driver and traveler security by allowing quick location of vehicles
and faster security response
Benefits to the crew
• Better communication facility – In case of exigencies like accidents,
medical exigencies, dacoits etc. the message can be flashed to the
control room by pressing relevant panic button, for getting required
assistance.
• In case of traffic issues crew can get instructions regarding diversion
of route in advance.
• Improving driving habits.
Passenger Information System
• SMS Query/Response System.
• Mobile App Response System
• Web Portal Information.
• Bus Station/Shelter LCD/LED Display
• In-bus display and announcement system
Important Reports
• Daily Bus Stops Skipped Report
• Daily Speed Violation Report
• Driver duty performance report (daily/weekly/
monthly)
• Daily Out shedding deviation report
• Driver wise daily improper stopping report
• Details of Missed trips
Thanks for your Patience
