Editor's Notes

  • #5: The University has adopted a wide-ranging new academic vision to shape its efforts in the coming decade to become a national leader in breakthrough research, innovative undergraduate and graduate education, service, and public engagement The vision, was developed by a group of faculty from across the University for more than a year. It identifies specific strategic initiatives as a basis for making informed decisions on recruiting talented faculty and students, organizing academics, investing in facilities, collaborating with external partners, and other actions. For more detailed information, please visit the website
  • #6: As you probably know, our campuses are located in Storrs, Waterbury, Avery Point in Groton Ct, Stamford, Gtr Hartford campus in W Hartford Ct, moving to downtown Hartford to the Hartford Times Building scheduled to open in 2016. The Law School in Hartford as well, and our campus in Torrington. UConn Health is located in Farmington which includes the John Dempsey hospital and the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry.

Your Husky One card is your official UConn ID and Key to campus. For example, some phone carriers provide a discount if you are a state of ct employee. Your Netid is your official UConn access to your electronic resources as you must know and have since you are viewing this module via HusckyCT.. Your Netid is your access to many other UConn electronic resources such as your uconn email address, and the student administration system whereby you will find your class roster, post grades and do many other student related function Please review the emergency closing policy and note that each UConn campus makes it own decisions regarding closings due to weather and other emergencies. There are times when Stamford and Avery Point may be closed, yet the rest of our campuses are open for business.
  • #8: UConn Today is our official electronic daily news update to the community. It is wonderful resource to know what is happening at UConn For example on June 2, 2014, there was an article about the Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman delivering the keynote address at the Geno Auriemma Leadership Conference coordinated by the School of Business. We also have a great deal of information on official electronic connectivity with Facebook, Twitter located at the Connect website which includes the ability to download the UConn Myapp on your phone or tablet We have thousands of websites, including your departments of course that will be important for you. Two other sites that you might find helpfiul is the on line employee resource guide which is designed for you as the place to go to to find all other UConn websites How do we keep you informed? We communicate with you via your uconn.edu email. It is our official way to communicate with our employees. We also have a Daily Digest that is sent to all faculty and staff M-W around 11 am to let you know of important policies, benefit updates and deadlines, events, and other information that employees would like to know. It is your responsibility to check it every day. Lastly we do have the Faculty and Staff home page that is organized to be your professional and personal resources page. Lastly, please note that we have recently gone through a review of our campus and its image. IT is everyone’s responsibility to keep our campuses physically beautiful. Also, we are also referring to ourselves as UCONN with specific guidelines on how we print it on materials and in writing. What colors we use, what font and more. Please check out Yes and lest I forget, we have a new dog in town. WE have a new “live dog” Jonathan as well as a new look. Quiz: What is the live Jonathan’s number as they have all had numbers? It is 14

  • #11: Advancing Education through programs that support teaching excellence. A resource you may find helpful is the Institute for Teaching and Learning.
  • #12: As a university, with close to 10,000 employees, we do have expectations and standards for all our employees. Each of you are valued for who you are and what you will be teaching. We value difference, debate, freedom of speech and expression. It is how I we debate and express ourselves as well as where it is done that is very important to us. We do expect that you work and teach in an environment that is respectful and civil by demonstrating behaviors that are professional and collegial.
  • #13: Do we want this slide?
  • #14: The Public Safety Division is composed of the Police Department, Fire Department, Office of the Fire Marshal and Building Inspectors, and Locksmith Services.    Our regional campuses, including the Law School, are supported by the UConn police and the local municipalities fire and medical support. At Storrs there are university personnel that provide fire, police and medical support.   Regardless of your campus locations, to report a police, fire or medical emergency, dial 911 from your office or cell phone. For routine matters involving the UConn police department, each campus has their own phone number to call. Also, a variety of emergency phones are located throughout our campuses. It is important as you park your car and walk to your classroom or other campus buildings, we urge you to look for the location of these phones, in the event you need to report an emergency   In the event that we need to communicate important emergency information to you, we recommend you register your phone at the website alert.uconn.edu. At this website, additional information on our emergency communication system can be found.   The Annual Security & Fire Safety Report can be found on the UConn Campus Police website listed below. We prepare this report in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act and the State of Connecticut Act Concerning Sexual Violence on College Campuses. This report includes statistics for the previous three years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings, or property owned or controlled by the University of Connecticut; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus. The report includes institutional policies on campus security, such as policies concerning alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, the reporting of crimes, sexual assault, and other matters.   Educational Programming is also provided by the UConn Police on a wide array of topics geared toward crime prevention and safety. For additional information, please go to publicsafety.uconn.edu
  • #15: The safety and security of all employees is of primary importance to   the University of Connecticut.  On August 4, 1999, the Governor of the State of Connecticut issued an executive order establishing a zero tolerance policy for workplace violence for all state agencies and public universities. Reporting Suspected Violations: Any act or incident that fits the definition of workplace violence outlined in this policy which occurs on the campus or at off-site locations under the University’s auspices or creates a risk to anyone at these sites must be reported immediately.  All employees are responsible for notifying the administration of any threats that they witness or receive.  Even without a specific threat, all employees should report any behavior that may be regarded as potentially threatening or violent or that could endanger the health and safety of others.
  • #16: As a UConn employee, we do have many policies and one I would like to highlight is the General Rules of Conduct. It is a baseline of expectations we have of you as an employee that lists unacceptable work behvaviors.. I ask that you read it as it can be found on our e-policy website listed on this slide or at the Office of Faculty and Staff Labor relations, also known as OFSLR If you have questions about it, please contact OFSLR
  • #17: In order to support your teaching, especially to be sustainable and electronic, there are many IT policies, services and other information located at the websites listed on this slide. You will more than likely work with your department to ensure you have the access and help you need electronically. We do have a centralized IT support that is also located on your respective campuses, as well as central IT located in Storrs.
  • #18: Here is some more information and requests we have of you in utilizing your uconn IT resources. You may have access to different systems that require different passwords. Please ensure you have strong passwords and are storing your UConn information on a UConn server. Also, any email and documents you create on behalf of UConn is considered subject to the Freedom of Information. If you have any questions about your IT resources, please begin with your department.
  • #19: To summarize, you are an incredibly important member of our UConn community. And for all our employees, we ask that you know UConn policies and information as well as your Schools/Colleges and of course your departments. We are also as state of CT agency and we abide by all State and Federal laws, statues and regulations. The next modules you will be taking, further inform you about many of our policies and laws and the respective resources we have available.
  • #20: So concludes this module. If I or any of my colleagues in Human Resources can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate in contacting us. WThank you and wishing you a very successful semester. Please dontinu
