CONCENTRAT
ION OF
SOLUTION
Content Standard: Some important properties of solutions.
Performance Standard: Prepare different concentrations of mixtures according to uses and availability
of materials.
MELC :
Express concentrations of solutions quantitatively by preparing different concentrations of mixtures
according to uses and availability of materials. (S7MT-Id-3)
OBJECTIVES:
• Enumerate and describe the types of solution according to the proportion of the solute and the
solvent (Diluted & Concentrated) and
• identify and describe the types of solution according to the amount of solute present in a given
solvent (Concentration)
• Calculate the percentage by weight of the given solutions.
• Calculate the percentage by volume of the given solutions
• Prepare different concentrations of solutions using available materials at home.
LETS HAVE A RECAP ABOUT THE
LESSON YESTERDAY IN FB LIVE !
• If you will be asked , what would you prefer for milk tea, 100 %
sugar , 775% sugar, 50 % sugar or 15 % sugar ?What would you
prefer ?
• Why do you think you were asked about how much sugar do you
prefer ?
Because the percentage of sugar will determine how much will
be the sweetness of your milk tea .
• WHAT IS CONCENTRATION OF SOLUTION ?
It describes the relative amount of solute and solvent in a given
amount/volume of solution.
Activity 1: WORD MATCH
• Directions: Match the statements described in column A to the
words in column B. Write the letter of your answer on the space
provided.
COLUMN A COLUMN B
1. It contains small amount of dissolved solute in a
given amount of solvent.
a. solvent
2. The component of a solution that comes in smaller
amount as compared to the other component.
b. concentrations
3. It describes the relative amount of solute and
solvent in a given volume of solution.
c. diluted
4. A solution that contains a large amount of
dissolved solute for a certain volume of solvent.
d. solute
5. It is the dissolving medium in a solution. d. concentrated
• WHAT ARE THR 2 TYPES OF SOLUTION BASED ON ITS
CONCENTRATION ?
• Types of Solution according to its Concentration
•1. Concentrated Solution
It happens when there is a large amount of
dissolved solute for a certain volume of solvent..It
has a large amount of solute in a small amount of
solvent.
Example: 1 glass of water & 1 sachet ( 25 g)of
powdered juice
•2.Diluted Solution
A solution that has a small amount of
dissolved solute in comparison to the amount
of solvent.
It has a small amount of solute in a large
amount of solvent
Example: 1 pitcher of water &
1 sachet (25 g) of powdered juice
Concentrated VS. Diluted
WEEK 7 CONCENTRATION OF SOLUTION .pptx
•REMEMBER!
•-As the amount of SOLUTE INCREASES,
the CONCENTRATION OF SOLUTION also
INCREASES
•-As the amount of SOLVENT INCREASES,
the CONCENTRATION OF SOLUTION
DECREASES
LETS
TRY TO
DO THIS
ACTIVITY 1: Calamansi Fresh
WHAT I NEED (MATERIALS)
 calamansi
 1000 mL water
 stirrer
 3 glasses sugar
WHAT TO DO
1. Carefully wash calamansi with water.
2. Cut crosswise and squeeze the juice. Make sure seeds are remove through a strainer.
3. Put 100 ml of water in the 3 glasses.
4. Mark the three glasses as glass A, B and C
5. Put 3 ½ tablespoon of calamansi juice in every glass.
6. In glass A, put 2 tablespoon of sugar, 4 tablespoon of sugar on glass B and 6 tablespoon of
sugar in glass C.
7. Stir the set of mixtures until all the ingredients are dissolved.
What do you observe on the following?
GLASS A GLASS B GLASS C
Amount of water 100 ml 100 ml 100 ml
Amount of Calamansi
Extract
3 ½ 3 ½ 3 ½
Amount of Sugar 2 tbsp 4 tbsp 6 tbsp
Appearance turbid turbid turbid
Color Pale yellow Pale yellow Pale yellow
Taste sweet sweeter sweetest
Guide Questions
1. Which of the calamansi solution is sweetest? C
___________________________________________________________________________
2. Which one is a concentrated solution? C
___________________________________________________________________________
3. What makes it concentrated? AMOUNT OF SUGAR IS GREATER THAN IN GLASS A & B
___________________________________________________________________________
4. Which one is a diluted solution? A
___________________________________________________________________________
5.What determines whether the calamansi solution is concentrated or not? AMOUNT OF SOLUTE
Let us try : CALCULATING
PERCENTAGE BY MASS
• From the three glasses of calamansi solutions, each
preparation contains 3 ½ tablespoons of calamansi extract
From the Calamansi Fresh activity, calculate the percent by
mass of syrup in glass C. Use the conversion factors below
for your calculation.
1 tablespoon = 15 grams
100 ml = 100 grams
Now let us try to find out if we can
calculate the concentration of
solution .
• 1.A solution contains 5 grams of salt and 195 grams of water.
A. How many grams of solution are present?
B. What is the percent by mass concentration of the solution?
• 2. A sugar solution has a mass of 500 grams. The solution contains 200
grams of sugar.?
A. How many grams of water is used in the solution?
B. What is the percent by mass concentration of the solution?
3. Sodium acetate is a compound that readily dissolves in water. How
much sodium acetate should you used in 135 grams of water to produce a
25% solution?
• Concentration of solution can be expressed thru :
1. Percentage by mass is the amount of solute in a
given mass of solvent expressed as gram solute per
100 grams of solution.
A 50 grams of urea is dissolved in 450 grams of water
to make a fertilizer. Calculate the percent by mass of
urea.

• MAKE A DIY DISINFECTANT AT HOME
COVID-19 cases have been growing in the US since March
and while there is not yet a cure, the CDC has approved certain
household disinfectants for killing coronavirus on surfaces. This
includes both Clorox wipes and Lysol wipes. At the beginning of
the pandemic, consumers stocked up and completely emptied
store shelves of these wipes, disrupting the entire supply chain.
How to make disinfectant at home
Low-level Disinfection (1:500 dilution of bleach | 100 ppm)
When to be used:
Safe level for toys, dishes, utensils and food contact surfaces.
How to mix the bleach solution:
1 ml (1/4 teaspoon) household bleach to 500 ml (2 cups) water, or
20 ml (4 teaspoons) household bleach to 10 L (40 cups or approx. 2 gallons)
Remember:
Cleaning must be done prior to disinfecting.
• A bleach and water solution should be mixed daily to preserve its strength.
• Leave the solution on the surface for a minimum of one minute. For high level
disinfection a 10 minute contact time is recommended.
