SCIENCE 7Concentration of Solutions
MELC : Expresses concentrations of solutions quantitatively by
preparing different concentrations of mixtures
according to uses and availability of materials.
Quarter : 1
Week : 6
Objectives:
A. Defines concentration of a solution;
B. Distinguishes concentrated solution from diluted solution; and
C. Shows willingness to answer a given problem using the correct
formula in finding the percentage concentration of a solution.
Let’s have a recap…
 What is a solution?
A homogenous mixture of two or more substances.
A mixture of solvent & solute.
 How are you going to define a solute and a solvent?
A solvent is a substance that dissolves the solute.
A solute is a substance dissolved in a solvent.
What is the solute in the given solution?
• Orange Powder
How about the solvent?
• Water
A mixture of orange powder (solute ) and water
(solvent ) forms an orange juice (solution).
A B C
Which of the picture shows a saturated
solution and unsaturated solution?
Saturated – B
Unsaturated – A
How about supersaturated solution?
Picture C
How are you going to describe a solution that is unsaturated?
It contains less than the maximum amount of solute.
What is a saturated solution?
It contains the maximum amount of solute dissolved by a given amount of
solvent.
When can a solution become supersaturated?
It holds more solute than it normally could in its saturated form. It
involves heating.
Let’s have a recap…
Let’s start!
QUESTIONS:
1. How will you describe the pictures above?
2. Which of the following solution is concentrated?
3. How are you going to describe the concentration of a solution?
4. Is there a way to express the concentration of a solution?
Diluted
Solution
 contains small amount of solute.
Percent by
Mass
 is a ratio of a measured amount of solute to a
measured amount of solution.
Terms to remember…
Percent by
Volume
 is a ratio of the volume of solute to the total
amount of volume the solution.
Concentration  is a ratio comparing the amount of solute to the
amount of solution.
Concentrated
Solution
 contains large amount of solute.
Concentrations of Solutions
measures of how much solute is dissolved in a specific amount of
solvent
We describe a solution as concentrated and diluted.
Concentrated Solution
 contains large amount of solute
Diluted Solution
 contains small amount of solute
CONCENTRATED DILUTED
Ways of expressing concentration:
%
%
 Volume of solution is
in mL
 Mass of solute is in g
 Mass of Solution = Mass of Solute + Mass of
Solvent Volume of Solution= Volume of Solute + Volume of
Solvent
Sample Problem:
1. What is the percent by mass of NaHCO3 in a solution containing 20g NaHCO3
dissolved in 600 g of water?
Given:
mass of solute = 20 g of NaHCO3
mass of solvent = 600 g of water
Required: Percent by mass= ?

contains 45 mL of ethanol dissolved in 125 mL of water ?
Given:
volume of solute = 45 mL of ethanol

Required: Percent by volume= ?
Formula:
