SPAN OF MANAGEMENT
– DEFINITION: The SPAN OF MANAGEMENT refers to the numbers of
subordinates who can be managed effeciently by a superior.
THE SPAN OF MANAGEMENT HAS TWO IMPLICATIONS:
1. Determine the shape of the organization.
2. Influences the complexities of individual managers job.
Factors Determining Span of
Management
– The span of management can be determined on the basis of a number of
relationships that a manager can manage. These are:
TYPES OF SPAN OF
MANAGEMENT
– WIDE SPAN MANAGEMENT
• The structures of wide span is
FLAT.
• Here wide refers to a more
complex supervisory.
• It takes little time to reach the
appropriate points as compared to
narrow.
• It is less expensive than narrow
span.
– NARROW SPAN MANGEMENT
• The stucture of narrow span is
TALL.
• Since span is narrow so it means
less number of subordinates under
one superior.
• It takes lots of time to reach the
appropriate points.
• It is expensive .
Delegation of Authority means division of authority and
powers downwards to the subordinate,it involves following
steps:-
– Assignment of duties.
– Granting of authority.
– Creating responsibiity and accountability.
Delegation of authority
– Delegation is about entrusting
someone else to do parts of
your job.
– Delegation of authority can be
defined as subdivision and sub-
allocation of powers to the
subordinates in order to
achieve effective results.
Factors influencing delegation
of authorities
– company’s history.
– Availability of capable person.
– Importance of costliness of decisions.
– Size of the enterprise.
– Available controls.
– Types of enterprise.
– Environmental factors.
