The Wire – Issue 101 11.09.12 NRC goes back to school for local hospital On Thursday 6 September, colleagues from Keele’s National Resource Centre took to the sports field to raise vital funds for the North Staffordshire hospital as part of their UHNS Charity 500 appeal, in which the hospital has asked 500 companies to raise £500 each. The £250,000 appeal will complete the cost of a PET CT scanner, used to detect the spread of cancer, which the Trust has purchased for £3million — thanks in main to the extreme generosity of a private donor, and the support of Keele University. As well as a compulsory dress down day (in which colleagues donated £1 to dress in either school uniform or sports gear), there was also a cake sale, a competition to guess the number of sweets in a particularly enormous jar (1,193 in total), and the crowing glory: Keele’s very own sports day. Races were staged in the morning and afternoon — each costing 50p to enter — and included an egg and spoon race, three-legged race, sack race, a team relay, and an all-competitive sprint. Medals were awarded at the end of the day in a patriotic ceremony (complete with the National Anthem), and the athletically gifted winners are listed below: • Morning three-legged race: Freddie Parker and Rebecca Shankland • Morning sack race: Zac Birchall • Morning egg and spoon race: Patrick Rodgers • Morning sprint: Zac Birchall • Afternoon three-legged race: Adam Edwards and Gavin Harvey • Afternoon sack race: James Aspinall • Afternoon egg and spoon race: James Aspinall • Afternoon sprint: James Aspinall • Team relay race: Gavin Harvey, Rebecca Westrup and Adam Edwards A prize was awarded to Lloyd’s consultant Kelvin Slezak for the best dress down outfit; who was also lucky enough to win the ‘guess the sweets’ competition. The Wire – Issue 101 11.09.12 Adecco colleagues watch history in the making with Olympics and Paralympics victory parade After eight weeks of inspirational Olympic and Paralympics achievement, in which London was placed firmly at the epicenter of the sporting world, more than 90% of Britain's medalists — including Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis, and Jonnie Peacock — took part in a two mile long victory parade through the streets of London. Twenty-one floats carried the 800 athletes from Guildhall to the Mall in a two-hour journey that gave the people of London the chance to revel in post-Olympic and Paralympics glory, and to thank their heroes for inspiring a nation. Record crowds lined the streets as open-top floats paraded the Team GB Olympic and Paralympics team, and a great many of our own colleagues were there to witness the historic moment as the floats passed through Fleet Street and paused at Bouverie Street — home of Adecco HQ. The parade came to a fitting conclusion as hundreds of Games Makers (the volunteers who brought London 2012 to life) marched proudly behind the athletes in a show of unison.
