How to get your thoughts & feelings on paper

 By the end of the lesson, students would be able to:
 Understand what is a reflection
 Appreciate the structure of a reflection
 Apply structure and language to writing a reflection
Lesson Agenda
 When do you reflect on something?
 When you are reviewing whether:
 something
 someone; or
 …an event
 …has an impact on you.
 How this has changed your life...
 What are some characteristics of a reflection?
What is a reflection?

 Reflections have the following characteristics:
 They are personal – no two reflections can be the same
 They are focused on feelings, thoughts and opinions –
but may use some facts to support these.
 Reflections may also revolve around some emotive
memory from your past that may trigger some
positive/negative feelings
What did you notice?

 Structure consists of the following:
 Introduction – provide details of the event/product
 A central idea (see slides on how to develop this idea)
 Supporting paragraphs around this idea
 Conclude by restating your thoughts and
impressions and insights gained.
Structure of a Reflection
 Step 1: Understand what it is that you have to reflect on before
proceeding with the essay. (study the question and the material given)
 Step 2: Ask review questions:
 How do I feel about this topic?
 How does it affect me?
 If it doesn't affect me, why?
 Step 3: Summarize your answers into a single sentence
Steps to writing a reflection

 Step 4: Write out a sentence with a main idea. Use this
to develop supporting ideas for your reflection
 Step 5: Conclude your reflection with some insight that
you have gained from this event or product…(How it
has changed your life.)
Steps to writing a reflection

 In writing a reflection, do not:
 …try to memorize a model answer
 …try to come up with a “yearbook reflection”
 …overstate and overdramatize your reflection
The “Don’ts” of Reflections

 We are going to write a reflection on the video
presentation on parenting and how your thoughts on
what parenting ought to be.
Let’s practice

Step 1: Ask Questions
 How did the video make you feel about parenting?
 Sad? For who?
 Anger? Towards who?
 Other emotions
 How does this video affect me?
 Causes me to think about my own parents?
 Causes me to think about the responsibilities of parents?

 As a group craft out a central idea.
 Suggested Central idea:
 The love of a parent never ends. The video help me to
understand that parental love involves great sacrifice and
sometimes pain
Step 2: Develop a central idea
