Lesson 2 focus on your purpose and your reader
“Great purpose leads to great achievement.”
1. Writing to inform
2. Writing to educate
3. Writing to communicate
4. Writing to entertain
 Requires the principles:
◦ TRUTHFULNESS- write-ups must be based on
factual observations
How to do it?
1. Gather as many data as possible.
2. Analyze if your data are reliable.
3. Then choose which data are truthful materials to
use for your write-up.
◦ ACCURACY- it is the use of correct and precise
information.
- Always verify the information that you plan to include
in your manuscript.
- It is the writers obligation to present the most accurate
information.
◦ TIMELINESS- implies the right timing of release or
submitting your write-up.
Lesson 2 focus on your purpose and your reader
 Winning the hearts of the reader and at the
same time teaching them something.
 This is the most important role of a teacher.
 Thus, a writer must ensure that hi write-up is
able to mold, to change, and to develop his
readers.
 Conviction- appeal to the intellect; convince
readers to believe what you have written
using factual information., figures/numbers
and arguments that are valid and logical.
◦ Use research findings and factual information.
 Persuasion- persuading readers using
information that would touch on their
feelings; joy/happiness, pity, guilt, hunger,
fear, etc.
Five Elements in Communication:
1. sender- source of the message
2. Message- ideas and feelings
3. Channel- means to send the message
4. Receiver- final consumer of the message
5. Feedback- ideas and feelings coming form
the receiver.
 Not all are serious writing.
◦ Drama script for a presentation
◦ Humorous story
◦ Anecdote
◦ After dinner speech
 Making your readers enjoy your write up is a
challenge.
 Good writing is premised on the interest of the
readers.
◦ Topics should be interesting and stimulating to your
readers.
 Studying profile of your readers.
◦ Occupation
◦ Age range
◦ Educational attainment
◦ Their interests
◦ Aspirations
◦ Goals
◦ Motivations
◦ Usual problems
