Considering parenting


Making the decision of whether to
become a parent or not is different for
everyone. We all have our own views,
opinions, and things going on in our lives.
In the end it is your choice. Unfortunately
there are issues beyond our control that
can prevent women from having
children, but luckily there are alternative
options such as adoption.
Financial troubles.
 Being single.
 Partner not wanting children.
 Infertility or illness.
 Unplanned pregnancy.
 Having to give up things in your life or
putting them on hold.

Pressure from family, friends, or partner.
Questioning if you are ready.
Your past experience with your own
parents.
Not thinking your partner is ready.
Deciding how many children to have.
Fear of not being a good parent.
Considering how to make a balance
between children, work, and your partner.


Charting your menstrual cycle is a good
way to learn your most fertile periods of
time and aid in your chances of
becoming pregnant.


Visit a health care provider or maternity
care provider to get help with:
› Determining any potential problems or risks

› Learning what choices to make to avoid

complications.
› Learning what supplements if needed should
be taken.
› Identifying what is a safe and unsafe
environment.


Some reasons for adoption:
› Health issues or infertility.
› Wanting to provide a loving life for a child in need.
› Not wanting to go through the physical aspects of

being pregnant.
› Choice.


Challenges:
› Financially, adoption can be very expensive.
› Finding an agency that works well with you and fear

of not finding the “right” child for you.
› Not having the emotional connection of going
through the pregnancy process.
Learning to deal with the pressures from
family and society.
 Its completely your choice and there is
nothing wrong with that, people who
care about you should respect that.
 Support groups are available and helpful
for people who need support.


› Childless by Choice Project



Being a parent can be a lot of hard work. I can
be challenging but can also be some of the
most amazing experiences of your life. Parents
need support and love from the people
around them whether they are having a child
or adopting. Being surrounded by a healthy
and supportive environment is beneficial for
both the child and the parents.
The choice of not being a parent also needs
support. It is their own decision and it should
be valued. For many people the choice of
whether to become a parent or not is not easy,
there are different pros and cons for people.
“My husband and I batted the idea of
children around for a while. There are
enough reasons to have them as there are
to not have them. Every other milestone in
our relationship seemed to take a while, but
when we decided to have a child, we just
closed our eyes and jumped. If we’d have
deliberated on children as long as we did
our other decisions, we’d never have kids”
