Purpose of research
By Ben Goldstone unit 2,3,21 task 1
Research methods primary
Primary research means to do it on your own so basically finding information and facts by yourself. An
example is to go and make a questionnaire, survey or interviews that i can collect information from.
Hopefully you would use the information that would build yourself up. Primary research is for you do go in
the real world and find information from humans in the world and to find new and obtain data. For example
you could put a poster or leaflets for the world to see and hopefully you would get feedback and use that
information for your research. Primary research is all reliable.
Primary
Pro’s- to get new data
•Reliable
•Easier to control
•New data
•Reliable
Con’s- questionnaires and experiments
• Time consuming
•People may be pressured,
•Results can be wrong
• Lack of resources
• evidence can be unreliable
Audience research
Audience research is about a target audience and to find what age, gender and important information about a
certain target audience. For example if you make a product it needs to be suited for a certain target
audience if you make a horror film 16-19 year olds the product needs to be suitable for their age and it
needs to be enjoyable for them otherwise bad feedback will come and you would lose money and it would
be a total waste of time. If you made a video game with a shooting zombie game the target audience would
need to be at least 15 to 18 which is why they have pegi 12-15-18 in stores, it's to make sure that you can't
buy the game if you're under 15 because it might have inappropriate language for the age group. The
background and the location will need to be suitable for the product and for the target audience.
Demographics- Studies of a population based on factors such as age, gender, ethnicity, locale, economic
status, level of education, income level and employment.
Psychographics- The study and classification of people according to their opinions, ideas, attitudes,
aspirations and other psychological criteria.

Research methods secondary
Secondary research is the opposite of primary, secondary is to find information using the internet and only
devices. The internet isn’t always truthly and there is some false information that’s why it’s better to hear it
from people in the real world.
Its an easier way to find information using online information but it’s not always a good thing as the
information you find isn’t always reliable and correct. Also some information can be very old information
but would not have been updated so it wouldn’t be true anymore or the information could have changed.
Lastly it's the quickest way of doing it as it’s all on the internet but you need to make sure everything
makes sense and is right.
Research - Viability
Viability is to decide if the product you make or buy is right and it's going to make money and it's going to
make you profit. To make the product you need to research other products similar to see cons they had
and problems so you can prevent them and compete against them to make it better. You need to check if
the product has been made by researching. It’s important to find this information as you want your product
to make lots of money and you want your target audience to buy and give good reviews. You could ask
question from the audience you’re targeting at to know what their into. For example GTA is a massive
game and they would of had to get people to give thoughts on what they should include in the game and
they have made so much money on it and it’s by asking people in the right age group.
Viability is the ability to survive or live successfully. So you need to make sure the product you make can’t
fail otherwise you can lose a lo of money and not have so much money anymore.
Qualitative
Qualitative research is type of research when you are trying to find deep information and correct
information. Qualitative research is based on opinions rather than facts. For example if you asked people
in an interview then its asking for their own opinion and what they think as the internet is to find facts.
Qualitative is to find information on people’s opinions in a more specific way and they need to make there
answer a long answer not just a simple yes or no.
If they need answers urgently they would use a certain target audience that have the best answer if you
ask someone if you prefer rap or pop they can say the answer and why they like and why it's better and
why you finding it interesting. Quantitative is to find more in depth information.
Quantitative
Quantitative research i based on numbers, facts, information and statistical data. As it involves numbers it
doesn’t take that much time to find the right information. It’s more of yes and no answers and it’s easier to
get information. A good example is if you ask a 17-22 year olds if they like horror or a different type of film
you’re going to expect different answers but you will either get a simple yes or no answer which is easier
than getting a more detailed answer but it’s also good to have a detailed answer. Answers are usually
given in charts and graphs to show the information diffrently using numbers and yes or no answers. Yes or
no answers find good information and if a product is made they will get told easier if the product was good,
make money and was worth making.
Market research
Market research is when you research about products and start to compete with them to see if you can
make a better product them and look at the reviews and cons and pros about there product so it doesn’t
happen to you. You need to make sure you don’t do what they did bad and prevent that from happening.
Also your not aloud to use copyright you can read about their product but you can’t go further than that.
You are trying to set a target audience such as teenagers 18-21 year olds to see what idea they could
have as at that age is when people are on social media all the time. If you put your product for people to
see on any social media a lot of different age groups would find out about it. Market research means you
can get feedback from your customers, they will tell you if it’s a good product and how it can be improved
and it will help you find a gap in the market.
