Multiplication of Real NumbersSection 2.4P. 88
Properties of Multiplication (p.89)Commutative Property: The order in which two numbers is multiplied does not change the product.Associative Property: The way you group three numbers when multiplying does not change the product.
Properties of MultiplicationIdentity Property: The product of “1” and any number is that number. a(1) = a 3(1) = 3 -5.3(1) = -5.3Property of Zero: The product of a number and zero is 0. a ( 0 ) = 0 -4(0) = 0
Properties of MultiplicationProperty of Negative One: The product of a number and -1 is the opposite of the number. a(-1) = -a 5(-1) = -5 -4(-1) = 4Sometimes called the Prop. Of Opposites for Multiplication.
Multiplication RulesPos x pos = pos 8 (5) = 40Neg x neg = pos -8 ( -5) = 40Neg x pos = neg -8 ( 5) = -40Pos x neg = neg 8 (-5) = -40
Multiplication RulesAn even number of negative factors equals a positive answer (product)(-2) (4) (-3)(-1) (-10) = (-4)2 = (-2)4 = An odd number of negative factors equals a negative answer. (-3) (-4) (-10) = (-3)3 = (-1)17 =
Use the rules(9)(-3) = ____ (-4)(-3) = ______(8)(-1/2) (-6) = _____ (-3)3 = _____(-2) (-1/2) (-3) (-5) = _____ (-2)4 = ____
Evaluate the expression-6x , when x = 7y3 – 7, when y = - 3-2x2 +5, when x = 3-3|-3x|, when x = - 4.2
