Professional Writing: 
Midterm Reflection

The 5 C’s 
• Clear – Every correspondence must inform, request, and 
persuade. The target audience must be taken into 
consideration and the message must be organized and 
conveyed in a way that is easy for readers to understand. 
• Concise- Determine what information is actually important to 
your readers and convey that information in simple language. 
• Complete- In business correspondence, having all of the 
information is very important. Omissions can have drastic 
effects on business activities (deadlines, miscommunication, 
convey unimportance, etc).
The 5 C’s 
• Correct- The correspondence needs to have proper 
formatting, grammar, and punctuation. If it does not, it makes 
it look unprofessional and takes away credibility. 
• Courteous- Being polite with your readers is very important, 
especially with correspondents outside of your company, 
especially customers. Being polite is also a good way to 
encourage your readers to do what you are asking of them.

• Writing 
• Revising
Chapter 1 Summary 
• Chapter 1 mainly dealt with the initial development of your 
piece. Developing and focusing on the main idea of your 
correspondence is the central idea of this chapter. I absorbed 
most of this information through watching the video of 
chapter one and taking notes and I went along. This 
information was important because planning how to create 
your piece is the first step. This information will be extremely 
useful in learning how to convey messages to future clients 
during various business activities.
Chapter 2 
• Adapting to new technologies 
• Strategies for learning a new technologies 
• Blogs and Forums 
• Organization use & tips
Chapter 2 Summary 
• Chapter 2 focused on various business communications and 
tools on how to use them effectively. Like chapter 1, I learned 
most of this chapter primarily through watching the video and 
taking notes as I listened and watched. The main point that I 
took away from this section was how to pick the appropriate 
communication tool for different situations. This chapter also 
went further and elaborated on how to effectively use those 
tools. E-mail and memo communication will be used 
frequently in communicating company-wide and with specific 
individuals.

• Acknowledgments 
• Complaints 
• Response 
• Refusals
Chapter 4 Summary 
• Chapter 4 dealt with how to handle different correspondence 
situations. Different situations call for different means of 
communication and different messages. For this chapter, I 
carefully read and took notes, noting the importance of the 
information. This chapter was important because it offered 
useful information on how to handle different situations; this 
was important because handling refusal letters and complaints 
can be extremely important. Handling such cases 
professionally is crucial in the business world.

• Conciseness 
• Emphasis 
• Parallel Structure 
• Transitions
Chapter 10 Summary 
• Chapter 10 was a very helpful chapter for me. Though I 
consider myself an avid reader and writer, I sometimes 
struggle with the more basic points of writing, such as 
transitions and parallel structure. I focused heavily on these 
topics in the chapter and even re-read them several times. 
These topics were important because I now realize that I 
struggle in this area but now I can start working towards fixing 
the problem. This will be useful in future correspondence 
because it will help to keep my writing professional.

• Headings 
• Layout Designs
Chapter 7 Summary 
• Chapter 7 focused on the importance of visuals and how to 
effectively incorporate them into your works. I learned this 
from reading and noticing the fact that important information 
that could be confusing without a visual aid (such as a diagram 
or graph.) The appropriate visual can make a huge difference 
to readers who are trying to interpret confusing material. This 
chapter was helpful to me because I now know when and how 
to incorporate important visuals like graphs into 
correspondences.
