Transformative Teaching – Helping Teachers Change The World
“I can't read a newspaper article, listen to a news report, read a book or a
magazine, have a conversation........none of that, without thinking, "Whose
perception is that, through what lens is that information filtered, how do you
know, why is that your position?" and on and on and on. It's driving my
husband crazy!!! I will never again be able to simply accept something out of
hand without critically examining it and reflecting on it. That's a huge change
for me, and one I really needed… I'd never even really thought much about
social justice in my classroom, school, and community before. Things just
were what they were... I cannot look at my students and our school community
ever again without considering the social justice aspect of what we do every
day and the power we hold as teacher leaders.”

  • 20. GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY Transformative Teaching – Helping Teachers Change the World Questions?

Editor's Notes

  • #2: TT– master’s program for practicing teachers
  • #10: Ethical leadership: Purpose/Mission (read statement) Support teachers to be empowered critical educators: 1. Who create inspiring learning environments and learning experiences that actively engage students 2. Who are active leaders in their schools 3. Who not only are great teachers, but who are re-inspired to stay in the profession because they know that the environment they offer students and the relationships they develop with them empowers their students to be actively engaged learners.
  • #13: Collaboration: Building a community of professionals   Cohort structure: Cohort of teachers begin and end the program together, progressing through each course in sequence together – builds relationships that allow critical dialogue. Target population of teachers: Range of pre-K to 12 teachers and specialists; you will engage in dialogue with peers about readings and projects – you’ll be building teacher networks of critical friends who support each other during the program and after graduation – the goal is to change the culture of schools. TT Faculty: teams of faculty of between 3 and 5. Interdisciplinary faculty who collaboratively construct every aspect of the curriculum and teach together at every class. Each school team has a faculty mentor who meets with them periodically at their school throughout the program.
  • #14: Research-based practice: > we use current research and theory to develop our curricular approaches (e.g., reflective practice; critical pedagogy (and the value of critical reflection to examine assumptions) >teachers develop the skills and practice teacher action research – systematically collecting and analyzing data to gain a better understanding of teaching and learning in their own classrooms.
  • #15: Social justice: We do a lot of work with social justice issues (this often involves examining oppressive structures and biases related to language, culture, and other differences).
  • #16: Feedback: We systematically collect our own feedback data from teachers in order to assess the impact of the learning experiences on them. This is an example of a response a teacher gave us at the end of the two year program. (read quote).
  • #18: In-State with discount = $506.00 per credit = $15,180 for the program Out-of-state with discount = $795 per credit = $23,850 for the program
  • #21: Graduation! Questions?
