- 2. THE STREET There is a crowded street as it is rush hour in the morning as people are making there way to work. The majority of people are dressed in suits and have briefcases as they make their way to work. Suddenly there is a break in the crowd as DAN(20) starts to run as he thinks he is going to be late for work. He is slim, tall, has blonde hair, wearing a suit, carrying an over sized black briefcase in one hand and a coffee in the other while staring at his watch. People start to stare at him wondering what he is doing. He suddenly slows to a brisk walk and turns left into an insurance office which is a very tall, modern building that has a very fancy interior. He looks into a window to see his reflection before sweeping his hair across with his hand and straightening his tie and suit jacket before throwing his empty coffee cup into a bin. THE LOBBY OF THE OFFICE He approaches the reception desk cautiously and the receptionist smiles at him. Liz(25) who is average build, quite pretty, has brown hair and is wearing a smart shirt and skirt starts to smile at Dan LIZ: Hello there can I help you? DAN: Its my first day here but....(quietly) I think I may be late. LIZ: What time were you due in? DAN: I was due in at 9 but according to my watch its 9:15. LIZ: You realize its 8:15 right, you have got 45 minutes until you are due in. DAN: Are you kidding me??? (CONTINUED)
- 3. CONTINUED: 2. LIZ: Nope the clocks went back last night. (she begins to laugh) DAN: Thank you so much at least I’m not going to be late, better early than late right (he begins to smile although sounds nervous) LIZ: Yes I guess so, there is people behind you so I need to deal with them please DAN: OK i guess I’ll wait over there (points towards a chair in the lobby) LIZ: Good luck on your first day see you around some time hey They smile at each other before DAN walks away and sits down. THE LIFT DAN is in the lift on his way up to the 5th floor which is where his office is when he spots a middle-aged man with an ID card with the same floor on it as him. This is BRIAN(48) he looks fed up with his life, always frowning, dressed in a smart suit, black hair going Grey and is stocky build and wears some glasses. DAN: (CAUTIOUSLY) Hi I’m Dan its my first day here..... you? Brian offers his hand before Dan shyly shakes it. BRIAN: I’m Brian I’ve been working here for 15 years now, you looking forward to it then? DAN: Ye I’am, the job looked really good which is why I applied and now I’ve got it. (CONTINUED)
- 4. CONTINUED: 3. BRIAN: The jobs OK I guess, It’s great at first but when you do the same thing for 15 years it gets boring and repetitive you know? DAN: So how come you haven’t left the job then? BRIAN: (Dan with this bloody recession do you really think I can afford to give up a job?) DAN: OK point taken, anyway what department are you on? BRIAN: I’m on admin you? DAN: Same (looks happy as he won’t be a complete stranger The lift pings and they are at their floor. They step out...
