ESIP VISION
To be a leader in promoting
the collection, stewardship and use
Of Earth science data, information and knowledge
that is responsive to societal needs.

Enhancing the serendipity of network
connections
ESIP CONNECTS APP
THIS IS A BEACON!
• Constantly sends out radio
signals to nearby
smartphones and tablets,
containing a small amount
of data
• ESIP Connects listens for
the signal
• Triggered noting person in
ESIP session
• Benefits: Opt-in once for
app; out of range of
specific beacons no
tracking
http://www.pointrlabs.com/blog/beacons-everything-you-need-to-know/
2015 SUMMER MEETING RESULTS
• ~50% used the App and of those ~50%
enabled location
• People that didn’t enable location:
– General concerns about location aware apps
– Couldn’t get it to work
– Didn’t have time to understand ask
• People that did enable 60% checked in to
sessions
2016 WINTER MEETING
IMHERE CHECK-IN
• Builds on Yelp and other ‘Check-in’ social
media ideas
• Builds opt-in into the system with every
interaction
• Down side: Potentially smaller fraction will
remember to check-in
RESEARCHBIT – NEXT STEPS
