Literacy - Students will participate in Literacy groups where they will read books at their reading level and work on
comprehension, phonemic awareness and other reading skills. Students will continue to learn personal spelling words. Our
thematic focus for the term will be, ‘Transport’ where the students investigate forces, push, pulls and transports from around
the world. Students will display their understanding through the creation of informative texts (explanations, information
reports, procedures, factual descriptions). Much of the grammar that will be taught this term centres on the types of grammar
needed to write various texts related to these themes.
Homework and Talk topics – Attached to this overview is the list of Talk Topics and the Project for Term 2. While we encourage
all students to participate in these programs, they are not compulsory. Please support your child to complete as many as you are
able to and let the classroom teacher know if you were unable to complete the tasks.

COGS – Through the Connected Outcomes Group (COGS) unit ‘Powering On’, students will explore the relationship between
force and movement in physical activity, the arts and science. Students will be engaged in :
 Investigating the energy of powered toys
 Exploring energy through movement
 Creating dance using music and toys as inspiration
 Investigating solar energy
 Making an artwork that records energy traces.
Science – Students will be investigating change through the Primary Connections unit, ‘Push-Pull’. The Push-pull unit is an ideal
way to link science with literacy in the classroom. The unit provides the opportunity for students to explore pushes and pulls.
Through investigations, students observe and gather evidence about how these forces act in air and water, and on the ground.
Students identify the effect of the pull of gravity and learn that both air and water can 'push'.
How can you help this term? There are a variety of ways you can help support your child’s learning this term:
(1) Continue to support your child to complete homework, home reading and other projects
(2) Volunteer to support your child’s teacher during literacy groups
(3) Talk to your class parent about other ways you can get involved in the school

POWER TOY : Bring in a powered toy from home. Describe the toy and talk about how it is powered and what the power does. Powered toys could include windup,
battery, solar, plug-in and wind powered toys.
