- MapServer is open source GIS software that has been in development since 1994 and is now maintained by the Open Source Geospatial Foundation. - In 2009-2010 there were releases of MapServer 5.6 that improved XML support, query processing, and labeling as well as security fixes. Code sprints were held to discuss the 6.0 release plans. - Future plans for MapServer include a new rendering API, Cairo and OpenGL support, improved WMS compliance, and continued performance enhancements. The community is encouraged to contribute through testing, documentation, and development.
