Study on the promulgators of medical doctrines
 In this chapter we can find the broad introduction about the
वैद्यक संहिता प्रणेत्र
 This chapter focusses on the description of the chief founding
authors in Ayurvedic Medicine as has been observed in various
texts.
 This chapter deals with the history of the authors of
Ayurveda.
 The founder of AYURVEDA Shastra are ASHWINI
DEVATAS(twins).
 Who are the doctrine of Gods.
 These extraordinary twin gods
performed miraculous
operation.
अश्विनौ देिभिषजौ यज्ञिाहाविति स्मृिौ ।
यज्ञस्य हह भिरश्विन्नं पुनस्िाभयां समाहहिम ्॥
प्रिीर्ाा दिनााः पूषर्णाः नेत्रे नषटे िगस्य च ।
िश्िर्वच िुजस्िम्िस्िाभयामेि चचकिश्ससिाः ॥

 Here Charaka appreciating the achievements of Ashwini
kumaras.
 The twin gods were the divine physician and known as
Yajnavahas.
 Ashwini kumaras were considered as physician of
Gods,because they treated the gods.
1. They united the head of यज्ञपुरुष.
2. They re-inserted the broken teeth of the
पूष्ण
3. Re-constructed the prolapsed eye balls of
भग
4. Repaired the frozen shoulder of इन्द्र.
चररत्रम ् हह िेररिाच्िेहद पर्ाम ्आजा
खेलस्य पररिक्मायाम ्।
सद्यण जङ्घामायसीं विवपलायै धने हहिे
सिािे प्रसयधत्तम ् ॥
 This shloka is taken from ऋग्वेद so by this we are able to
know about अनाहदत्व of AYURVEDA.
 खॆल was a king.due to some reason his wife ववश्फला entered
the war field to fight against the enemies and her legs were
cut like the wings of the bird.
 A the time priest of the king went and request the अश्श्वनन
क
ु मारा’s.in the night itself treated her very quickly by putting
artificial iron limb and made her capable to walk.
ििण धन्िन्िररविाषर्ुरायुिेदप्रदिािाः ।
बिभ्रि् िमण्डलुं पूर्ाममृिेन समुश्सििाः ॥
 This shloka explains about धन्द्वन्द्तरर प्रादुभााव.
 When the देवा’s and राक्षसा’s started churning the milky ocean to get
अमृत,they got many things one by one and some gods collected
those.
 At last श्री वुष्णु came out from the milky ocean in the form of
धन्द्वन्द्तरर.
 In one of his hand he had a pot with full of अमृत.
अहं हह धन्िन्िररराहददेिण जरारुजामृसयुहरणऽमरार्ाम ्।
िल्याङ्गमङ्गैरपरैरुपेिं प्राप्िणऽश्स्म गां िूय इहणपदेषटुम ् ॥
 I am धन्द्वन्द्तरर,the first god(आहददेव) ,
 I destroyed the old age,disease,and death of gods inदेवलोक,
 Now I have come to earth to teach more about Shalyatantra
along with seven branches.
 *धन्िन्िरर – धन्िं िल्यिास्त्रं िस्यान्िं पारभमयतिा गच्िति इति ।
धन्िन्िररधान्ििृिां िररषटममृिणद्ििम् ।
चरर्ािुपसंग्रह्य सुश्रुिाः पररपृच्िति ॥
 One who is the pioneer of Ayurveda,the one who came out
from the क्षीरसागर along with अमृत that lord dhanvantari’s
feet were worshipped by सुश्रुत ,and he requested हदवोदास
धन्द्वान्द्तरी for the information about Ayurveda.
 Lord dhanvantari went back to the स्वगा after समुर मथन and
once again he entered the world as the king of काशि.this
काशिराज हदवोदास धन्द्वन्द्तरी is the गुरु of सुश्रुत
पातञ्जलमहाभाष्यचरकप्रततसंस्कृतैः ।
मनो वाक्कयदोषाणां हर्त्रेऽतहपतये नमैः ॥
 The author Chakrapani writes appreciating the achivements
of Patanjali.
 Patanjali Yoga sutra is capable to remove the doshas of mind,
 पातंजशल मिाभाष्य vyakarana shastra is qualified to purify the
speech
 The Charaka samhita is good to immacualated the doshas of
body.
 The author Chakrapani happily does his namaskara to this
great person who is the king of snakes.
 According to history Adishesha entered this world 3times amd
contributed 3great texts to this world.
 In the 1st avatara he came as Patanjali and wrote पातान्द्जाला
योगसूत्र.
 And in 2nd avatara he came as Patanjali and contributed the
Patanjala mahabhashya
 And 3rd avatara as Chraka,he presented चरक संहिता to this
world.
यतश्चर इवायातो नज्ञातैः के नातचद्यतैः ।
तस्माच्चरक नाम्नाऽसौ तवख्यातैः तिततमड ले ॥
 Here Bhava mishra explains hor Charaka was present in this
world.
 This acharya came to the earth and wandered secretely he
was not recognised by any one,so he was called as Charaka.
 चरक – गुप्तेन चरतीती चरक,one who moves secretely is called
Charaka.
Chapter 3 vaidyakiya subhashita sahitya
 The author of योग वानताक salutes whole heartedly to
Patanjali for his valuable contribution.
 Through Patanjalis yogasutra the doshas of मनस can be
immaculated,through Patanjala Mahabhashya speech can be
purified ,and through Vaidyakiya shastra doshas of sharira can
be immaculate.
यथा शसंिो मृगेन्द्राणां यथाऽनन्द्तो भुजङ्गमे।
देवानां च यथा शम्भुस्तथाऽर्त्रेयोऽतस्तवद्यके ॥
 Here the sage Harita appreciates his गुरु आत्रेयापुनावासु by
giving somilies.
 Lion is the most powerful animal so he is मृगेन्द्र ,अनन्द्त is the
strongest among all serpents so he is the king of snakes and
the lord shiva is supreme among the gods.
 In the same way Atreya is supreme and great among all the
vaidyas.
ब्रह्मणस्तनयो योऽभूत् मरीचचररनत ववद्युतैः।
कश्यपस्तस्य पुर्त्रोऽभूत कश्यपानात्स कश्यपैः ॥
 The son of Brahma was famous in the name of Marichi.
 His son was Kashyapa.he got the name Kashyapa due to his
bad habbit of drinking Kashya.
 About the name of Kashyapa there are many opinions.
 कश्यपानात सा कश्यपः –one who drank the kashya was called
Kashyapa.
 सुक्ष्मतयापश्यती इनत कश्यपः – he observed the globe kneely ,
hence he is known as Kashyapa.
 His name was may be pashyaka initially but gradually the
word pashyaka , may be changed as kashyapa in practice.
अत्त्रः कृ तयुगे वैद्योद्वापरे सुश्रुतैःस्मृतैः।
कलौवाग्भटनामाच गररमाऽर्त्रप्रतदश्यते ॥
 Here Harita appreciates the great Ayurvedacharya in
different yugas.
 Atryapunarvasu was the grea physician in कृ तयुगा
 सुश्रुत in द्वापरयुग
 वाग्भट in कशलयुग
 Here the explanation about the great acharya of
3yugas,mentioned but there is no explanation regarding
त्रेतायुग.
 In त्रेतायुग Rama was the king so its रामराज्य therefor there
may be no deseses for प्रजा.
 In रामराज्य may be all were well versed in the knowledge of
Ayurveda so there was no specific name of Ayurvedacharya.
