Portable Particulate Measurement Device
The Portable Particulate Measurement Device, the SEMTECH-PPMD, is
the only portable system that directly measures the mass of exhaust
particulates under real world conditions, with nanogram sensitivity. The
unit integrates three key, patented subsystems from the SEMTECH product
line, into a single self contained unit: the Exhaust Flow Meter (EFM), the
Micro Proportional Sample System (MPS), and the Carousel Quartz Crystal
Micro balance (CQCM). When used in conjunction with the SEMTECH-DS,
Sensors’ gaseous emissions analyzer, it can be used to measure Not-to-
Exceed events, enabling complete measurement compliance with the EPA’s
testing requirements.
The PPMD comes with a host software application that allows the user
to control the unit for system setup and audits, view the current system
status, and collect, process and analyze the data. Results are displayed in
easy-to-read tabular and graphical formats.

Optional Accessories
Micro Constant Dilution System: For engines with high
particulate emissions, a secondary constant dilution unit is
built into the system, in addition to the proportional dilution
system.
Humidifier Module: This external module provides
humidified air for the bypass flow over the crystals, to
condition them before and after sampling.
HorizontalMounting Kit:This kitenables sidewaysmounting
of the PPMD.
Dual Power Cable: Power cable specifically designed to
provide power to both the SEMTECH-DS and the PPMD
simultaneously.
System Features and Benefits
Proportional Sampling: The built-in partial flow dilution system
eliminates the need for a CVS, while meeting EPA’s CFR40, part 1065
and ISO 16183 accuracy requirements.
Multi-Crystal Design: By using eight crystals for mass measurements,
one crystal can always be used as a reference crystal, which measures
the particulate mass in the ambient air and accounts for this in the
mass calculations. Additionally, crystals are allowed to stabilize
between samples, enabling eight hours of data collection between
crystal cleanings.
Highly Sensitive: With a crystal mass sensitivity of 100 Hz/µg, short
sample times can be used for testing.
Fast Results: With the PPMD post processor, results can be obtained
withinfiveminutesofdatacollection,inlieuofthetypical24hourturn-
around time for batch processing from a gravimetric filter system.
Low Maintenance: Crystal cleaning and filter changes are the only
regular maintenance items, which are simplified with easy access.
SEMTECH-DS Integration: The system is designed to be operated as a
stand-alone device, or in conjunction with Sensors’ gaseous emissions
analyzer, for a complete emissions measurement solution, that
meets the EPA’s CFR40, part 1065 portable emissions measurement
requirements.

Portable Particulate Measurement Device
Micro Proportional Sample System (MPS): The
SEMTECH-MPS is a partial flow dilution system
that controls the dilution air flow with a multi-
bit parallel solenoid array. Each solenoid is fitted
with a critical flow orifice to provide precise and
repeatable flow characteristics. The system uses a
signal from the EFM to establish a diluted flow that
is proportional to the total raw exhaust flow. This
patented technology operates at 10 Hz, providing a
near instantaneous adjustment of sample flow. The
MPS meets the requirements of US EPA CFR40 1065
and ISO 16183.
Carousel Quartz Crystal Micro balance (CQCM): The
SEMTECH-CQCM brings the accuracy and sensitivity
of laboratory mass measurements to the field.
The system is comprised of eight crystals which
oscillate at about 10 kHz. As the diluted sample
from the MPS is pumped past the crystals, a corona
discharge generates an electrostatic force, driving
the particulates to collect on the crystal surface. As
the particulates accumulate, the natural frequency of
the crystal drops in relation to the mass. When one
crystal is done sampling, the system automatically
changes to the next available crystal, allowing each
one time to stabilize before sampling again. In this
manner, the system can operate unattended for up
to eight hours.
The Technology
Exhaust Flow Meter (EFM): The SEMTECH-EFM is
designed to measure total raw exhaust flow. It uses
an averaging pitot tube that operates under the
Bernoulli principle. The EFM provides a turn-down
ratio of more than 50:1 and exceeds the US and
European performance standards for exhaust flow
meters.
