.In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
Text
• Our title sequence is very conventional in the
way that we have used our text throughout the
sequence. So first off we have the company’s
name appear who produced the film which is
‘Warner Brothers.’ For this particular bit of text
we made it so that it fades on to the screen and
slows down while moving so you can read it then
fades off again. While this in smaller writing it
says ‘presents and moves off the other way and
fades the same time as the ‘Warner Brothers.’
• After this the picture on the screen changes it
comes up with the directors name and our chosen
director is Martin Scorsese. So on our screen it
says ‘A Martin Scorsese film.’ But its played out so
the ‘A’ is on the top, the Martin Scorsese is in the
middle and ‘Film’ is at the bottom and the ‘A’ is
moving left and the ‘Film’ is moving right. This is
necessary to be in a films title sequence because
firstly some directors have a big following so they
bring a lot of star power and two they deserve the
credit.
• A few shots after this the names of the two most
famous Actors in our film appear, ( Leonardo
DiCaprio and J.K Simmons ), because these
particular celebrity's have a lot of star power so
if there names are mentioned right away it keeps
a lot of eyes glued to the sequence.
• our editors name will then appear a few shots
later ( Richard Bruce ) and after it gives credit to
the person who made the soundtrack ( John
Williams ). After this in the corner it says
‘Casting’ in the corner and the name Billy
Hopkins appears on top of it. This is
conventional because it gives credit to the
casting, soundtrack and editor.
• The camera then cuts to a shot of some folders
and a kettle and just underneath writing fades
on to the screen and says ‘ Director of
Photography Darius Khondji.’ This is
conventional as it gives credit to the director of
photography.
• At the end of the sequence the name of our film
appears a letter at a time in sync with the
soundtrack which builds tension. The name of
the film to be mentioned at the end of the
sequence is very conventional as its just about
to go into the film.
Establishing Genre
• When making a title sequence one of the most
important things is establishing your genre so
your audience know what they're watching. Our
Genre is a hybrid genre as it is a crime thriller
with elements of Horror. So firstly in our title
sequence we start off with the camera facing the
floor at a low angle with low key lighting and
someone walks in front of the camera so you can
see their shoe. This straight away brings a
mystery type atmosphere.
• In addition to this the soundtrack clearly brings
that element of horror to it with the deep strings
playing creating an early atmosphere. Our
soundtrack is parallel to our editing and camera
work so they both go hand in hand to establish
the genre.
