An application service provider (ASP) is a company that offers individuals
or enterprises access using computer networks and the Internet as the
mechanism to deliver and manage the service to applications and related
services that would otherwise have to be located in their own personal or
enterprise computers. Sometimes referred to as "apps-on-tap," ASP”
services are expected to become an important alternative, not only for
smaller companies with low budgets for information technology, but also
for larger companies as a form of outsourcing and for many services for
individuals as well.

In essence, ASPs are a way for companies to
outsource some or almost all aspects of their
information technology needs. They may be
commercial ventures that cater to customers,
or not-for-profit or government
organizations, providing service and support
to end users.

The goal of an ASP business is to reduce the
cost of software distribution and
maintenance. Using a client/server model
(often Web-based), network software can be
installed in a centrally-controlled place
and hosted - accessed by the customers over
remote links. This method to providing
software solutions is sometimes called
the software as a service (SaaS) approach.

Easy to Install and Maintain
Quick to upgrade
Fewer chances of computer crashes
Lower maintenance costs
ASPs also offer superior technical support
which may be reason enough for most
businesses

If you do not have a reliable and fast Internet connection, your
software performance will suffer.



Some users get grouchy if you force them to use Internet Explorer.



ASP software windows can be slow and clunky to refresh on your
screen.

According to ASPnews.com, ASPs are broken down into
five subcategories:
 Enterprise ASPs -- deliver high-end business applications.
 Local/Regional ASPs -- supply wide variety of application
services for smaller businesses in a local area.
 Specialist ASPs -- provide applications for a specific need,
such as Web site services or human resources.

Vertical Market ASPs -- provide support to a
specific industry, such as healthcare.
Volume Business ASPs -- supply general
small/medium-sized businesses with
prepackaged application services in volume

A Web hosting company - Companies like Verio and
WebHosting.com provide a classic ASP scenario -- virtual
Web hosting. These companies provide hardware,
software, bandwidth and people to host Web sites for
companies and individuals. Typically, they charge
something like $15 to $30 per month for the service, and
may host hundreds of accounts on a single machine.

An e-mail provider - A Web hosting company usually
provides some sort of e-mail service with your Web
hosting account. There are two other alternatives:
– Free services such as Hotmail or Yahoo! Mail
– E-mail server ASPs who run exchange servers, POP servers

or IMAP4 servers and distribute them on a monthly-fee
basis - For example, a company in the Raleigh area called
Inter-path offers a complete e-mail solution at a rate of $8
per month per account (as of 4/10/2000).
•

The advantage of the second approach is that the email address uses your company's domain name.

A fax provider
E-fax provides a free fax service that delivers
faxes to your e-mail box. This is a classic
example of a free ASP.

The future of ASPs and their influence ,on anyone who is
involved in IT and networking industries, is hard to
envision.



However, there are going to be many interesting
advancements to come with the industry and how it will be
used and sold.
