  • #3: LisaOur community:Growing quickly and becoming more diverseOne of the fastest growing districts in TX Challenge - working to establish processes in systemsChange – lots of opportunities for faculty and staff (I’ve been with the district for 6 years, and this is my 4th position)Community expectations – our HS campuses with low Eco Dis populations are being compared with established neighboring affluent HS campuses – we’re getting thereTraining of personnel - lots of new to profession teachers, growing AP teachers

  • #8: LisaRoll up your sleeves, let’s get to work!
  • #9: LisaSteering Committee - Keep us moving and talking about Naviance – awareness:Project Manager – Agendas - keep us focused on a few issues at a timeContract Manager – deal with the contract and make sure funding taken care ofLong term meeting – set-up times to meet and talk with representation from each user group and campusTraining decisions – What needs to get done? Who needs to be trained? Where, When? Etc.Settings – determine in a group, great to have a Naviance or another experienced person on the line to get all HS settings set and understand why we are choosing a particular setting.Share Best practices – provide opportunities between HS campuses, as we learn share-outRoll-out matrix/timeline – we’ll share ours. Best advice we received from our experienced Austin neighbors – don’t try to do too much year 1Usage data – under reports – student and parent can be reviewed – by grade, by campus – determine, what’s your focus? Again, an opportunity to share Best practices among campuses. Naviance is useful and beneficial only if it is getting used!Network with an experienced user – ask questions! The Naviance webinars are very informational, but where do we begin?
  • #10: LisaMarketing/Branding:Flyers – what is Naviance? – have some printed materials, post on web sites, all-calls, etc. Check out the document library in Naviance to see if you can find examples out there you can use.District and campus – log in sitesUse your schools – CPHS commercialArticle - a story to our communications director to get to her newspaper contact – ongoing awareness opportunities
  • #11: LisaMore awareness – need lots of visuals out on your campusesWe took the Naviance small posters and put them together to make a collage – printed and laminated for our HS campusesOur focus this first year was to try to hook the students
  • #12: LisaYou must partner with people managing your Student Information SystemsLetter mailed to parents without e-mail addressParents with e-mail address received the same letterOne time log-in code – questions to think about – Who on the campus will handle calls for parents having questions? Extended families – step-parents – who has access? Who shouldn’t? – Opportunity to talk about – information is pulled from the student information systems –you must update the information at the campus – Navaince – we have set it to pull and update information nightly from our Student Information System. Also, if you send and e-mail for each of your campuses, they could all potentially respond back to you with questions. We’ll talk about e-mails and things to watch in a bit

  • #18: MelissaTo continue with our theme of building the village…..You will notice on the back of your “Parent Letter” there is a copy of our roll-out matrix. If you will look at that with me…
  • #19: MelissaOur CCR Team developed this Task matrix for the first 2 years of our initial usage. As you can see we highlighted the 3 tabs we were the most interested in getting out students into:The Colleges Tab; The Careers Tab; and The About Me tab.As you can also see we designated what type of instruction or availability there was to be with each “task”.A = Access, no specific direction was given for these tasks.C = Curriculum / Direct Teach, very specific direction or instructor lead teaching was involved.N/A = Not available at this timeI have highlighted 3 areas to demonstrate the differences between year 1 and year 2.As you can see, In the Colleges Tab, we specifically wanted all grades to receive Curriculum based instruction on the “Colleges I’m Thinking About”. We wanted our students to do some college exploration and be able to share their thoughts and college information with their parents.Under the Careers Tab, we highlighted two areas that we knew would be valuable to our students and parents: The Career Interest Profiler and the Explore Careers and Clusters. We didn’t make these two Curriculum based for all grade-levels, but did highlight the uses as we were giving them instruction in other areas of direct teaching. We were more interested in getting our students in the program and having the resources available for future use. We did however want specific grade-levels to go ahead and complete specific tasks related to career choices and course selections in the future. The majority of our Curriculum taught lessons were concentrated in our 9th grade ACE (Academic and Career Excellence) class along with our AVID classes. Once we got the kids “hooked” into Naviance it is pretty easy to keep them engaged in the resources available, and our parent liked the ease and intuitiveness of Naviance.
  • #20: MelissaAs you can see in Year 2 we determined that our focus would hone in on specific areas:Colleges I’m Applying To; Scattergrams; Career Interest ProfilerStill keeping our focus on the Colleges tab, Careers tab, and the About Me tab, we are going to be able to highlight some new resources because of data we collected in year 1. Colleges I’m Applying To was one of the areas we really wanted to demonstrate to our students that this was really “One Stop Shopping”, as they could apply to the schools of their choice directly through Naviance; Scattergrams was where we needed to have that data collection to share out with our parents and students. As you can see here this year we will concentrate on showing our students the importance of GPA, Test Scores, and where our students applied and were accepted to go to college; Under the Careers tab- we will continue to direct teach the Career Interest Profiler through our 9th grade ACE and AVID classes, but for the rest of the grades, this was introduced to them in year 1, so we are leaving it with Access for them to retrieve their information, and continue to explore careers. As you can see on both charts that we designated specific people who were to be responsible for various lessons/pieces of our roll-out; however, this looked differently on each campus, depending on our campus CCR Team. We will continue to work with our 9th grade ACE classes and all of our AVID classes with specific tasks, but the teachers have now been trained and are support resources for our students.
  • #21: MelissaHow did we get our parents and students invested in Naviance? For our students: We just shared our matrix with you; we also rolled-out Naviance to our students in different ways, either through classroom instruction time or through large group rotations. For our Parents: We each hosted Parent Nights, as Kathy mentioned earlier, that looked different. For Both: The biggest “bang of our buck” was when we all put our students Ranks and GPA’s into the system and used that as the carrot to get students and parents to log-in to find this information. Previously we would distribute through a notebook, or index cards, or some other way. We are always looking for more ways to get our parents and students into the system. You are wondering who do we train?Year 1 we concentrated on those who really needed to know about Naviance: The Steering Committee; Campus CCR Teams; ACE and AVID Teachers; Counselors; Administrative AssistantsYear 2 we are branching out to our Camus Registrars; Librarians; Senior Teachers; and all of our Career and Technical Education Teachers. We have been very systemic in our approach to rolling-out Naviance in an effort to get the product out to our communities, and training those who needed direct access, while not trying to overwhelm our campus staffs in “another thing” to add to their plate.
