Mixtures and compounds are two types of impure substances. Mixtures consist of elements or compounds that are not chemically combined and can be separated by physical means, while compounds consist of elements that are chemically bonded together in definite proportions which require chemical means to separate. Compounds form through chemical reactions that release or absorb energy, unlike mixtures which do not involve chemical changes when forming.

Compounds • Consists of two or more elements combined by chemical bonding. • A compound is always homogenous. • The components cannot be broken by physical means , only by chemical means. • During formation of compound it is always accompanied by energy like liberation of heat etc. • Its components must be present in a definite proportion by mass.
