Lesson 4 Values and Attitudes
Upon completion of this lesson, we expect that you will
be able to:
• Reflect on and explore your own values and
attitudes;
and
• Consider how your values and attitudes affect your
behaviour and the choices you make.
Learning Objectives
Introducing Values and Attitudes
Let’s think
about our
values and
attitudes
Understanding your own values and attitudes is
an important part of anti-bias work.
So, what are values? Briefly, our values are our
beliefs and principles about what is right and
wrong and what is important in our lives. Our
values help to define who we are and how we
behave. Values differ from person to person, as
well as across cultures, families and communities.
Attitudes are the way we express our values. For
example, if you rate family high you will work
hard and be prepared to sacrifice to ensure the
best for them.
 Read more about this by following the link to
the supporting document “Values and
attitudes”.
Exploring Own Values
Let’s find out about
your own values
 To help you get a sense of which values are important in
your life, look at this list and rank the values in order of
which are most important to you.
Rank the following values in order of which are most
important to you (from 1 – 12 ) by following the link below
 security
 status

 We hope this activity helped you to think more about
your personal values.
Fresh Start
Let’s find out more
about attitudes and
values
This next activity will increase your awareness of your
attitudes and values, and how they affect the choices
you make.
It has been decided to send a group of people to a
recently discovered island where they will live an
isolated existence for the next 50 years in order to
create a new society.
You are heading the mission and you need to choose
12 people who have applied for the expedition to
accompany you on the island to start this new society.
Exploring Own Attitudes and Values
Let’s find out more
about our own views
C
Choose these 12 people from the list provided in
the link below
http://pdt.qjar.co/questions/exploring-own-attitudes-and-
values/
Now that you have chosen your team of 12
people, let’s explore the choices you made and
your reasons for making them.
 Click on the “Deepen your knowledge Part 1”
link and complete the activities.
As you answer the questions for this activity,
consider what your own attitude might be and
what (if any) “work” might be needed to work
on an attitude that is or could be discriminatory.
 Once you have completed all the activities
you may continue.
Let’s look at:
Persona Dolls are one of
the most effective ways to
help children “unlearn”
negative or discriminatory
attitudes. Let’s look at
how one instructor helps
children understand that
people living with
disabilities are competent
and active.

End of lesson quiz
We have come to the end of Lesson 4 and it is important to check on
what you have learned in this lesson. This on-line quiz will assess your
knowledge on the topics covered in this lesson.
Let’s reflect on what you have learned in this lesson
 How did you do?
 If you did not get all the answers correct, try again. Once you have a score of
5 you can move on to Lesson 5.
