The student was asked to create a short film with a group that included pre-production, production, and post-production stages. They found the task straightforward and that it was successful compared to other groups. They learned three film techniques: the 180 degree rule, match on action, and shot reverse shot. Things that went well included getting all needed shots, no corrupt footage, and reasonably good actors. Things that could be improved were camera quality, needing more shots but running out of time, and some group friction. The preliminary task gave the student an idea for their two-minute opening of a panning shot following a character driving to a bass-heavy song.

How did you find each stage of the process? We were given the task of creating a short piece of film which included a short conversation, in which we had to do work for pre-production (writing the script and drawing up a story board), production (directing as well as acting), and post- production (editing). I found the task fairly straight forward as I’ve had experience filming during GCSE media overall I think it was a success in comparison to other groups Write the 3 techniques/rules you learnt about during the preliminary task: -180 degree rule - Match on action - Shot reverse shot List three things that went well during the filming/editing process: -we managed to get all the shots we needed -None of the footage was corrupt -The actors were reasonably good List three things you think could have been improved in these stages: - The camera quality wasn’t the best - I think it would have been if I could have got more shots but we ran out of time - The team had a slight bit of friction but overall it was a good experience Has the preliminary task given you any ideas for you 2-minute film opening? If not – think, then say Perhaps an early morning panning shot, with a basey song like arctic monkey “do I wanna know” following a character, who perhaps starts driving along the country roads.
