G321 Preliminary Task Evaluation

Write about the preliminary task. What were you asked to do? How did you
find each stage of the process?
For the preliminary task we were asked to film a short piece of dialogue (roughly
three lines). This stage of the process was easy as it was only 3 lines of dialogue
to create. We also had to film the actor walking through a door, sitting down and
talking. This stage of the process was easy because the actors match on action
was good and the filming process was not time consuming. Lastly we were asked
to edit the recordings to create a fluent film of two actors speaking to one
another. The editing stage was average as some of the footage was hard to edit
because the continuity was average but I was able to produce the film and
therefore complete the preliminary task.
Write the 3 techniques/rules you learnt about during the preliminary task:
I learnt not to break the 180 degree rule which means the camera cannot cross
the line for example if the director films some dialogue over the shoulder of the
actors right shoulder then they would need to film the left shoulder of another
actor to execute the 180 degree rule perfectly. I also learnt that the main actor
has to perform the same way as he had done the first time i.e. if he sat in the
chair normally then the next take he did the same thing then he would be
consistent and this would make it easier to edit also known as match on action.
Lastly, the shot/reverse shot allowed unless to shoot one person’s shoulder cut
onto the second actors shoulder and then back to the first actors shoulder.
List three things that went well during the filming/editing process:
The first thing that went well during my filming was that the match on action
was perform correctly which allowed my editing to be efficient and correct.
Secondly, the editing process went extremely well and all the frames and cuts fit
perfectly allowing for a fluent flow of film. Lastly, I did not break the 180 degree
rule so therefore this made my filming fluent
List three things you think could have been improved in these stages:
Continuity could of been better for example during the dialogue Jack is looking
downwards but in the next cut his head is neutral so therefore his eyes are
looking straight ahead. Another issue that could have been improved was the
camera quality footage as when I came to edit the footage was blurry. The final
issue that could have been improved was the speed of the dialogue as Jack and
Amy spoke quick it meant editing the cuts and for the shot reverse shot was
harder than it could have been.
Has the preliminary task given you any ideas for you 2-minute film
opening? If so, what? If not – think, then say 
The preliminary task has given me ideas of different shots I could to catch the
audience reaction and draw them in. It has also given me a rough idea to the
editing process and that each cut has to be perfect.
