G321 Preliminary Task Evaluation
Name: Sarah Fox
In a group with: Megan Gardner, Rebecca Clarke
Write about the preliminary task. What were you asked to do? How did you
find each stage of the process?
We were asked to create a short clip using different camera and editing
techniques. We did 5 scenes using different shots. We had to record someone
walking down a corridor, grabbing a door handle, walking through a door and
having a small conversation. It was difficult to get the door handle grab correct
because you had to remember exactly how you did it and do it twice so that was
the hardest part because you needed continuity.
Write the 3 techniques/rules you learnt about during the preliminary task:
I learnt about the 180 degree rule, we weren’t allowed to go over the line
otherwise the angles would be switched. Also, I learnt that when filming
someone you need to get their full body in the shot otherwise it will look weird.
Finally, I learnt that you need to be specific with the shots to maintain continuity,
you can’t do something in one scene and not do it in the other.
List three things that went well during the filming/editing process:
1) Editing went well because all the clips matched together which made it
easy
2) Using the camera was easy because it was on a tripod which made it easy
to manoeuvre around
3) Adding titles and dissolves to make it look professional went well
List three things you think could have been improved in these stages:
1) I cut off the top of Rebecca’s head which I could’ve prevented if I would
have moved the camera up a bit
2) Editing would have been easier if the dialogue wasn’t until everyone was
sat because it made it difficult to do a shot/reverse shot because it didn’t
look right
3) I think that I could have improved the editing by adding a few more
effects
Has the preliminary task given you any ideas for your 2-minute film
opening? If so, what? If not – think, then say 
The preliminary task has given me some ideas for my film opening. For example,
zooming into something (like the door handle) to add suspense to the scene.
Also, using shot/reverse shot if there is any dialogue to make it look more
professional and less boring. I don’t have any major ideas about what I want to
do but I the preliminary task has given me ideas of the shots I need to be taking
in order to have a good film opening with continuity.
