Brainstorming – Who should join?
• People with various backgrounds, sectors
• People from various regions
• Who else?
Basic Requirements
1. Comfortable environment – out of the
normal setting
2. Rules – no mobiles; no critisism on ideas
raised
3. Group size
4. Icebreakers
Techniques and Tools
- the Crawford’s Slip Approach
Preparation
• How to present the problem?
• How to analyze the contributions?
• How to give feedback to the participants?
• Paper slips – 5 to 25 ideas from each participant
Briefing and Idea Generation
• Clear and simple
• Tell how the input of participants will be used
• 5 to 25 ideas per participant
• Organization of ideas/groupsings
Feedback shows contributions are valued!
Techniques and Tools
- Brainwriting
• 5 to 7 people
• Paper in front of each person
• Write down the problem everyone is trying to solve at the top of the page.
• Give a group 3 min to write down three ideas for how to solve the
problems.
• Gather in the papers, shuffle them and then pass them out for the round
two – everyone generates three more ideas on the paper they have
received
• The moderator decides how many rounds there are
• When rounds are finished, write all ideas on a whiteboard and discuss
which ideas would work best for solving the problem
Techniques and Tools
- the Stepladder Technique
STEP 1: Present the task
STEP 2: Form a core group (2 members)
and let them to discuss the problem/task.
STEP 3: Add a member to the core group.
S/he present the ideas before hearing
what ideas have already been discussed.
The others will present their own ideas
and then they discuss their options
together.
STEP 4: Repeat the process by adding
members.
STEP 5: Reach ta final decision.
Techniques and Tools
- Reverse Brainstorming
• ‘How do I solve this problem?’ vs. ‘How could I possibly cause the
problem?’
• How to use the tool?
- identify the problem or challenge
- reverse the problem
- brainstorm the reverse problem to generate reverse solution
ideas
- when ideas to solve the reverse problem have all been raised,
reverse these into solution ideas for the original problem or
challenge
- evaluate these solution ideas – can you see a potential solution?
• Example on Customer Satisfaction
Techniques and Tools - Starbursting
