There are three major types of microphones: dynamic, condenser, and ribbon. Dynamic microphones are the most rugged and can withstand high sound levels close to the source without damage. Condenser microphones are more sensitive but can produce higher quality sound from a distance. Ribbon microphones are similar to condensers and produce a warmer sound preferred by singers, but are only for indoor use. Microphones also have different pickup patterns, with omnidirectional picking up sound equally from all directions and unidirectional better from the front.
