Road Infrastructure Safety ManagementThe principle on which RISM is based is to provide "self-explaining roads and a forgiving road environment"8
A self-explaining road ....Giving drivers good information about the road ahead makes the driving task easier, enables drivers to make better choices and reduces the risk of an accident.  This is the essence of a self-explaining road.  9
.... and a forgiving road environment.  A forgiving road environment is about constructing flatter batters and side slopes, covering drains, marking hazards which cannot be removed, providing safety barriers where there are steep slopes, etc., so that if a vehicle leaves the road or its lane, the risk of a serious or fatal accident is reduced.  10

CR Process  	Crash reduction reporting (CRR)
 	 Crash reduction implementation (CRI) 13
Crash reduction reporting processCollect and analyse accident data Identify potential sites (locations or routes) Inspect site, accompanied by Balai and Polda / Polres 	(relate road user behaviour and infrastructure issues with accident analysis)Produce report with recommended crash countermeasures (blackspot report) 14
Crash countermeasure recommendations Classified into four categories (refer Workshop CRI Report)  15
Crash reduction implementation processFor a selected site (location or route) Complete a field survey and design the recommended works Produce detailed engineering drawings Produce a specification of the works and a bill of quantities Issue implementation document 16
Three (of several) key provisions which will improve road user safety    Provide sealed shoulders
  Provide delineation of the road alignment at bends and sharp curves
  Marking hazards, particularly the end walls on narrow bridges 17
