• Come back together (or stay together) and talk some more.

 and represent your org too

What Do YOU Want to Talk About?

               #12NTCPPB Slide 7
Suggested Topics for
Today’s Discussion
• What’s the difference between being transparent and being too personal?
• People trust other people more than they trust organizations. What does
this imply for how your org should use social media?

• Are certain topics taboo when walking the personal/professional line
(politics, religion)? Are certain behaviors taboo (oversharing, swearing)?
Do you follow the “What Would Grandma Think?” guideline?
• How much personal stuff should you include? Is there a set ratio?

• Do you set different “rules” for yourself on different platforms?

• Does your org have a social media policy? Is it working for you?

                                  #12NTCPPB Slide 8
Food for Thought

"You forget how to share with people who do know you.
To avoid misunderstandings, you start dumbing down
your posts and only writing things which are literal and
mostly non-controversial. (At least I do.) But that
means your friends don't enjoy the connection that
comes with hearing you be you, instead of edited-you.“

                         --Gina Trapani, smarterware.org

                                 #12NTCPPB Slide 9
Food for Thought

People are people. They aren’t brands. When people become “brands,” they stop
being people … If you really want to brand something, focus on your business, on
  your blog, on your product.

-- Olivier Blanchard, the brandbuilder blog

“… with the onslaught of social media, consumers expect personalized attention. They
expect you [i.e. your org] to listen, be responsive and even have a sense of humor.
Kinda like a person.

This culture shift has ’brand’ sitting on the sidelines, while ’personality’ calls all the
plays …”

-- John Haydon, WHY YOUR NONPROFIT NEEDS A PERSONALITY AND NOT A BRAND

                                          #12NTCPPB Slide 10
Report Back / Wrap Up
What did you learn in your small group discussions?
