CMS Content Updating
In this chapter, you will learn:
o Identify the correct files formats used in CMS
o Define what is “digital graphics”
o Identify the characteristics and file extensions of
    various graphic formats
o Describe the advantages and disadvantages of
    the various formats across platforms.
Digital Images
Still images are generated by the computer in
two ways: as bitmaps (or paint graphics) and
as vector (or just plan “drawn”) graphics
Digital Images
Bitmaps
o are used for photo-realistic images and complex
    drawings requiring fine detail.
o image files are compressed to save memory and
    disk space

• Vector
o are used for lines, boxes, circles, polygons, and
    other graphic shapes
o can be filled with colour and patterns
Colour Models
RGB - Red, Green and Blue
o are the colors that monitors and televisions use to
    show colors
Colour Models
CMYK - Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black
o are the colors used to produce full-color
    photographs and designs
Colour Models
Indexed Colour Mode
o is a product of the Internet revolution
o can contain up to 256 colors and has 8-bit depth
Colour Models
Grayscale Colour Mode
o a color mode made up of 256 shades of gray
Digital Graphics Editing
Pixels
o the smallest unit on a display screen or monitor

Resolution
o Resolution refers to how an image is "resolved."
o The smoother or more clear that an image
appears; the more resolved it is to our eyes.
o The higher an image's resolution, the better it will
    appear
Digital Graphics Editing
Screen Resolution
Factors that affect image when viewed on screen
o The quality of the monitor being used
  o actual image's quality

o Common resolution for on-screen images is
    72dpi
Digital Image Formats
Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG)
  o JPEGs are bitmap images
  o can be edited/created by image-editing software
o used primarily for photographic images
o can save in either RGB or CMYK color mode at
    whatever resolution is needed
  o uses lossy compression
Digital Image Formats
Graphic Interchange File (GIF)
  o bitmapped graphic files
o compresses drawings and cartoons that have
only a few colours in them
  o supports transparency
o allows for animation (Animated GIF)
o can display between two and 256 colors
o of little use in the world of professional printing
o GIF image is always in index mode
Digital Image Formats
Encapsulated PostScript (EPS)
o contain any combination of text, graphics and
images (both bitmaps and vector-drawn objects)
o the most versatile file format that is available
o can be generated by all drawing applications as
    well as most layout applications
o widely compatible with a variety of desktop
    publishing applications
o Images can be selected with mask channels
o ile format can store information about the
    halftone screen type
Digital Image Formats
Portable Network Graphics (PNG)
o a bitmapped image format that employs lossless
    data compression
  o supports palette-based images
o PNG was designed for transferring images on
    the Internet
Digital Image Formats
PDF – Portable Document Format
o stands for Portable Document Format
o can contain text, images and tables such as
   those produced by spreadsheets
 o PDF supports security.
o PDF files are not meant to be edited
o A cross application and platform description and
   publishing format.

o PDF is a proprietary file format. - disadvantage
