Frequently Asked Questions
Who can apply for an Aurizon Apprenticeship?
Aurizon encourage people from all backgrounds to apply including women, mature age applicants, school
leaver’s and members of indigenous and other minority groups.
What are the requirements for applying?
All applicants must be:
• Australian citizens or
• New Zealand citizens or
• Persons with permanent residency visas
Where will I be based during my Apprenticeship?
Depending on the trade you are apprenticed in, you may be rotated through different parts and locations of
Aurizon to gain as much overall knowledge and experience as possible. e.g. Sarina, Rockhampton or Gladstone
Who pays for the TAFE component?
Aurizon will cover the costs of the TAFE fees required to complete your Apprenticeship.
What will my salary be?
There are a number of contributing factors in calculating apprentices wages these are dependent on level of
school completed e.g.: year 10, 11 or 12 and or your age if you are over 21 years of age prior to commencing
your apprenticeship with Aurizon you are paid an adult rate of pay. Aurizon also pay above award rates of pay
under our current EA Agreement.
Am I guaranteed a job at the end of the Apprenticeship?
Aurizon cannot guarantee you a job as a tradesperson on completion. Continuing employment on completion
of your apprenticeship will depend on the number of trade positions available at the time, and you’re on the
job performance during your apprenticeship.
What hours will I work?
As an Apprentice you will work on average a 76 hour fortnight. Some areas work different rosters to meet tight
maintenance schedules while other areas work Monday to Friday day shift only. This will be explained more at
interview.
Do I get any holidays?
Yes. You will be entitled to a minimum of four weeks or the number of weeks that may be outlined in your
roster paid annual leave per year.
Is there a Probationary Period?
Yes, a 90 day probation period is part of all Apprenticeships while Traineeships have a 30 day probation period,
this period is included in the length of the Training Contract. This period can be extended due to your conduct
and performance if you don’t meet the required workplace standard.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the selection process for the program?
It is important that you have an email address and access to a computer as all our applications are processed
on the Aurizon Internet site. Once you have lodged your application, we will confirm your application has been
received via email. You may be invited to participate in a number of assessments. Literacy & numeracy testing
and psychometric testing forms a compulsory element for all apprenticeships & trainees. Following completion
of testing, you may be invited for a Panel Interview. For candidates successful at interview, background checks
and pre-employment medicals including drug and alcohol tests complete the process.
What is the Psychometric testing?
To successfully undertake an apprenticeship, it is important that a person has the necessary skills and abilities
for the role. In selecting people to undertake apprenticeships within Aurizon, we evaluate a person’s skills and
abilities to ensure that they have the best chance of success, which benefits the individuals themselves and the
organisation. In order to give themselves the best chance at performing well on the assessments, candidates
should develop their skills as best as they can through practice and training. This can be done at school, other
learning environments, and through trying out new activities.
Where are the tests held?
Generally the testing is held in key regional locations across Australia. Some testing may be internet based
which can be done from a home computer. We try to assure that you will need to do minimal travelling to sit
the test but in some instances this may not be possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I am not available to attend a testing session or interview?
We try to accommodate with testing and interview dates due to the sheer volume of applicants it is
difficult to meet all requests for an alternate date. However, should there be an issue we will endeavour
to do our best to accommodate your needs. If we can’t, you may need to make yourself available for the
time specified.
When will I start?
Dates will be provided during the recruitment process.
What if I am unsuccessful? Can I reapply for the next intake?
Yes, we would welcome your application. Due to the large numbers of applicants each year and limited
number of positions available, not all applicants will be successful through the process.
Does Aurizon pay the relocation costs of new Apprentices?
No, it is your responsibility to relocate to the area near the city/town/depot you applied for.
