z e-RUPI: PM Modi to launch digital
payment solution on August 2nd
 e-RUPI is a cashless and
contactless instrument based on a
QR code for digital payment.
 It is a QR code or SMS string-
based e-Voucher, which can be
sent on the mobile of the
beneficiaries. It is a seamless one-
time payment mechanism.
 The users of e-RUPI can redeem
the electronic voucher without
using a card, internet banking or
digital payments app at the service
provider.

Vice Admiral SN Ghormade takes charge
as Vice Chief of Indian Navy
 Vice Admiral Satish Namdeo Ghormade has assumed
charge as the new Vice Chief of the Naval Staff.
Ghormade succeeded Vice Admiral G Ashok Kumar.
 Ghormade has served as the commanding officer of the
guided-missile frigate INS Brahmaputra, minesweeper
INS Alleppey, and submarine rescue vessel INS
Nireekshak.
 Prior to taking charge as the Vice Chief of the Naval
Staff, Ghormade was serving as the Deputy Chief of the
Integrated Defence Staff (Operations and Training) since
March 8.

PV Sindhu wins bronze, becomes second Indian
to win two individual Olympic medals
 She had won silver in 2016 Rio Olympic Games
after losing in the final to Spain's Carolina Marin.
 PV Sindhu has become the second Indian after
Sushil Kumar to win two individual Olympic
medals.
 Despite a great Olympic campaign, PV Sindhu
lost her semifinal match against world no. 1 Tai
Tzu Ying in two straight sets on July 31st.
 Prior to this, she had not lost a single set in this
year's Olympics.

COVID-19: China sounds alarm as Delta variant
spreads to 18 provinces, rolls out mass testing
 At least 18 provinces in China have raised concerns
about COVID-19 as more than 300 domestic cases
were detected in 10 days.
 It poses great challenges to the Chinese
Government as it deals with the worst epidemic in
months.

away at 80
 Menon was born in Kerala. She graduated
from Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam.
 She was a disciple of eminent Carnatic
musicians such as Shri Late Chertala
Sivaraman Nair.
 She has sung over 100 songs in Tamil and
Malayalam movies, including hit Malayalam
songs such as ‘MookambikaStotram’,
‘Narayaneeyam’, ‘Mukundamela’,
‘Ritubheda Kalpana Charutha Nalikaya’,
and ‘Mangalam Nerunnu’.

Centre de-licenses sugar industry to set
up new sugar mills
 The Union Government has de-licensed the
sugar industry to encourage the setting up
of new sugar mills in the country.
 This was informed by Consumer Affairs and
Food and Public Distribution Minister Piyush
Goyal during a reply to supplementaries in
the Lok Sabha.
 The Minister that the government is
encouraging sugar mills to divert excess
sugarcane to ethanol blended with petrol a
long-term measure to deal with the problem
of excess sugar.

Government to establish 1,000 Khelo
India Centers across the country
 The Central Government informed on August 2, 2021,
that the Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry has
decided to set up 1,000 Khelo India Centers in India.
Out of them, 360 centres have already been notified.
 The Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports, Anurag
Thakur in a written reply to Rajya Sabha, said that the
athletes are being selected under the Khelo India
Scheme and will be assisted with the annual financial
assistance of Rs. 6.28 lakh per annum.
 He further informed that 236 sports academies are
also being accredited across India under the ‘Support
to National, Regional, State Sports Academies’.

Huge asteroid 2016 AJ193 to fly closely past
Earth on August 21:
 A huge asteroid will fly past Earth very closely
on August 21, 2021, reported Earthsky. It will
not hit Earth.
 The asteroid, named 2016 AJ193, is
reportedly is rushing inward towards the sun
in its 5.91-year orbit. Earth is in its
approximated path but it will not hit the planet.
 The asteroid will pass the Earth some 8.9
lunar distances away. It will be at its closest
on August 21st.

Earth’s longer days reason behind
oxygen growth, suggests new theory
 Scientists have come up with a new idea for
how Earth got its oxygen. The theory is, it is
because the planet slowed down and days got
longer.
 A study which was published on August 2,
2021, proposes and puts to the test the theory
that longer, continuous daylight kick-started
the weird bacteria into producing lots of
oxygen, making most of the life on Earth as we
know possible.
 The scientists dredged up the gooey purple
bacteria from a deep sinkhole in Lake Huron
and tinkered it with how much light it got in lab
experiments. The more continuous light the
microbes received, the more oxygen they
produced.

First-ever Zika Virus case reported in Maharashtra,
Centre rushes a high-level medical team
 First Zika virus case in Maharashtra: Maharashtra
reported its first-ever Zika virus case on August 1,
2021 after a 50-year-old woman from Belsar village
in Purandar tehsil (Pune) was diagnosed with the
infection.
 The woman was diagnosed with Zika virus and also
Chikungunya on July 30.
 The Union Health Ministry rushed a high-level
multidisciplinary team on August 2nd to monitor the
situation in the state, support in the management of
Zika cases and recommend necessary public health
interventions.

Lok Sabha passes General Insurance Business
(Nationalisation) Amendment Bill, 2021
 Lok Sabha on August 2, 2021, passed the General Insurance Business
(Nationalisation) Amendment Bill, 2021.
 The bill was passed amid the protests by the opposition over various
issues including the demand for a probe into allegations of
surveillance through Pegasus spyware.
 The bill passed by the Lower House of Parliament aims at providing
greater private participation in the public sector insurance companies
as well as enhancing insurance penetration and social protection.
 The Insurance Business Amendment Bill was introduced by the Union
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Lok Sabha on July 30, 2021.
 The minister had also announced in her budget speech that under the
private agenda of the government, one general insurance company
and two public sector banks will be taken up.

Hockey Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: Indian men's
hockey team crash out of semifinals, to play for
bronze
 Indian men's hockey team crashed out of
the semifinals after they lost 5-2 against
Belgium at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics on
August 3, 2021.
 The Manpreet Singh-led team will now play
for the bronze medal against the loser of
the match between Australia and Germany.
The Indian hockey team despite a good
start lost the tempo slightly in the last
quarter.

Prime Minister Modi to chair debate at
UN Security Council on August 9
 PM Modi will virtually preside over an
open debate on maritime security at the
United Nations Security Council (UNSC)
on August 9, 2021.
 Arindam Bagchi, the spokesperson in
the Ministry of External Affairs, said that
it will be the first time an Indian Prime
Minister will chair an open debate at the
United Nations Security Council.

Myanmar’s military leader Min Aung Hlaing declares
himself Prime Minister, says elections in 2023
 The military leader of Myanmar Min Aung Hlaing
declared himself as the Prime Minister of
Myanmar on August 1, 2021. He said that he
plans to be in charge for two years during an
extended state of emergency before holding an
election in the country in 2023.
 The leader promised multi-party elections as well
as the lifting of the state of emergency by August
2023, extending an initial timeline given when he
had deposed civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s
elected government earlier in 2021.

payment solution
 The Prime Minister said that e-RUPI is an example of how
India is moving forward & connecting people in the 21st
century with the help of advanced technology.
 He said that he is glad that it has started in the year when
India is celebrating its 75th year of Independence.
 PM Modi further said that e-RUPI can be used not only by the
government but also by a non-govt organisation that wants
to support anyone in their education or medical treatment.
 He said that this will assure that the amount donated is
being used only for the said work: PM Narendra Modi

Rajya Sabha passes Coconut Development
Board (Amendment) Bill, 2021
 Rajya Sabha on July 30, 2021, passed the Coconut
Development Board (Amendment) Bill, 2021.
 The bill will make the post of the Chairman of the
Coconut Development Board a non-executive position,
increase the number of members of the Board to six
from four, and allow Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh to be
able to nominate their representatives to the Board.
 The Coconut Development Board (Amendment) Bill,
2021 amends Sector 4 of the Coconut Development
Board Act, 1979.

What is Rule 267 in Rajya Sabha?
 Under Rajya Sabha's Rule 267, any member, can
with the consent of the Chairperson, move that any
rule may be suspended in its application to a motion
related to the business listed before the Council of
that day and if the motion is carried, the rule in
question shall be suspended for the time being.
 What this means is that a notice issued under
rule 267 seeks to set aside the upper house's
listed business of the day to discuss the subject
raise by one or more members.
 Exception
 The rule will not apply where specific provisions
already exist for suspension of a rule under a
particular chapter of the Rules.

Parliament passes Inland Vessels Bill
2021
 Parliament passed the Inland Vessels Bill
2021 after the Rajya Sabha approved it on
August 2, 2021. The Lok Sabha had passed
the bill earlier on July 29, 2021. The bill
seeks to replace the Inland Vessels Act, 1917
and promote cheaper and safer navigation.
 Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and
Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal tweeted
saying that the Inland Vessels Bill 2021
promotes cheaper and safer navigation,
ensures protection of life & cargo and brings
uniformity in the application of laws related
to inland waterways & navigation.

India takes over UNSC presidency, key focus on
maritime security, peacekeeping, counterterrorism
 India assumed the presidency of the United
Nations Security Council (UNSC) on August 1,
2021. India took over the rotational presidency of the
15-nation UNSC from France.
 Indian Ambassador to United Nations, TS Tirumurti
thanked France Permanent Representative to the
UN, Nicolas de Riviere, for steering the UN Security
Council for July month.

  • 19. z Myanmar’s military leader Min Aung Hlaing declares himself Prime Minister, says elections in 2023  The military leader of Myanmar Min Aung Hlaing declared himself as the Prime Minister of Myanmar on August 1, 2021. He said that he plans to be in charge for two years during an extended state of emergency before holding an election in the country in 2023.  The leader promised multi-party elections as well as the lifting of the state of emergency by August 2023, extending an initial timeline given when he had deposed civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government earlier in 2021.
  • 20. z e-RUPI: PM Modi launches digital payment solution  The Prime Minister said that e-RUPI is an example of how India is moving forward & connecting people in the 21st century with the help of advanced technology.  He said that he is glad that it has started in the year when India is celebrating its 75th year of Independence.  PM Modi further said that e-RUPI can be used not only by the government but also by a non-govt organisation that wants to support anyone in their education or medical treatment.  He said that this will assure that the amount donated is being used only for the said work: PM Narendra Modi
  • 21. z Rajya Sabha passes Coconut Development Board (Amendment) Bill, 2021  Rajya Sabha on July 30, 2021, passed the Coconut Development Board (Amendment) Bill, 2021.  The bill will make the post of the Chairman of the Coconut Development Board a non-executive position, increase the number of members of the Board to six from four, and allow Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh to be able to nominate their representatives to the Board.  The Coconut Development Board (Amendment) Bill, 2021 amends Sector 4 of the Coconut Development Board Act, 1979.
  • 22. z What is Rule 267 in Rajya Sabha?  Under Rajya Sabha's Rule 267, any member, can with the consent of the Chairperson, move that any rule may be suspended in its application to a motion related to the business listed before the Council of that day and if the motion is carried, the rule in question shall be suspended for the time being.  What this means is that a notice issued under rule 267 seeks to set aside the upper house's listed business of the day to discuss the subject raise by one or more members.  Exception  The rule will not apply where specific provisions already exist for suspension of a rule under a particular chapter of the Rules.
  • 23. z Parliament passes Inland Vessels Bill 2021  Parliament passed the Inland Vessels Bill 2021 after the Rajya Sabha approved it on August 2, 2021. The Lok Sabha had passed the bill earlier on July 29, 2021. The bill seeks to replace the Inland Vessels Act, 1917 and promote cheaper and safer navigation.  Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal tweeted saying that the Inland Vessels Bill 2021 promotes cheaper and safer navigation, ensures protection of life & cargo and brings uniformity in the application of laws related to inland waterways & navigation.
  • 24. z India takes over UNSC presidency, key focus on maritime security, peacekeeping, counterterrorism  India assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on August 1, 2021. India took over the rotational presidency of the 15-nation UNSC from France.  Indian Ambassador to United Nations, TS Tirumurti thanked France Permanent Representative to the UN, Nicolas de Riviere, for steering the UN Security Council for July month.
