Networking  101 1.  What is networking? 2.  Who can network? 3.  Why network? 4.  Where do you network? 5.  When do you network? 6.  How do you network?
What is networking? Networking is the art of building and maintaining connections for shared positive outcomes. Real networking is connecting. Connect – to become joined; to have or establish a rapport.
What is a network? Usually, an informally connected group or association of persons. These associations can be personal relationships with friends, family, and others you meet in an informal gathering. They can be business relationships you develop with vendors, customers, supervisors, subordinates, co-workers, peers, and competitors you encounter during the course of your career.
Who can network? Anyone  can network. Networking is something that anyone and everyone can learn. Networking is something that anyone and everyone should learn.
Who can network? Introverts Inner directed Think to talk Energize alone Enjoy few stimuli Need concentration Focus on thoughts and ideas Prefer one-on-one discussion Value privacy Extroverts Outer directed Talk to think Energize with others Enjoy simultaneous stimuli Need diversions Focus on people and events Prefer group discussions Value public sharing
Why network? Networking allows you to Find a new job Achieve a promotion Make a new professional contact Make a new personal contact Improve the world Expand your influence achieve your potential. Sell a product or service Write a book Seal a deal Improve collaboration Build a reputation Achieve your dream Grow a business Etc., etc.
Where do you network? Work Conferences and trade shows Training sessions Career and job fairs Social situations Online - the Internet Everywhere!
When do you network? All the time  With anyone and everyone Anywhere and everywhere
How do you network? Positive attitude Visual contact Seek common ground Be interested, not interesting Be polite Follow-up

Techniques To Build and Expand Your Career Network   1.  Ask members of your current  network for referrals. 2.  Join professional or trade  organizations. 3.  Attend professional or trade  meetings, shows, etc. 4.  Volunteer 5.  Attend networking events
Techniques To Build and Expand Your Career Network   6.  Contact former professors, college  alumni association, and career services  office. 7.  Join or ramp up your activities on social  and professional networking sites. 8.  Join or start a job club. 9.  Conduct informational interviews. 10. Contact former co-workers, vendors,  customers, clients, and peers.
