Literature review:
Focuses on research question
Current knowledge of topic by recognised authors
Secondary and tertiary sources
Widely read previous research of topic
Theoretical and practical findings about a topic
Belongs to the introductory part
Is characterised by a logical flow
Has typically references to all resources used

The use of webpages such as Google
The Check list:
Traditional criteria to be applied
– Accuracy
– Authority
– Objectivity
– Currency
– Coverage
Additional challenges
Resources in UCT Libraries
5/25/2020 76
Accuracy
• Are sources for any factual information listed so they can be
verified?
• Can you detect some sort of quality control? – look at
grammar, spelling etc.
• Are charts, graphs clearly labelled and easy to read?
Resources in UCT Libraries
5/25/2020 77
Authority
• Can you identify organisation/company/person responsible?
• Is there a link describing goals, purpose, nature of organisation?
• Are there contact details?
Resources in UCT Libraries
5/25/2020 78
Objectivity
• Are biases clearly stated?
• Is it easy to distinguish between informational and advertising
content?
Resources in UCT Libraries
5/25/2020 79
Currency
• Are there dates to indicate
• When the page was written?
• When it was placed on the web?
• When it was last revised?
Resources in UCT Libraries
5/25/2020 80
Coverage
• Is there an indication that the page has been completed?
• Is there a print equivalent?
• Is it clear what topics the page intends to address?

What is Research Data Management (RDM)?
Data
Source: Pomerantz, J. Metadata. The MIT Press, 2015
Research Data Management (RDM)is the care and
maintenance of the data that is produced during the
course of a research cycle. It is an integral part of the
research process and helps to ensure that your data is
properly organized, described, preserved, and shared
Research data lifecycle
Why Research Data Management (RDM)?
Managing your data…
● is sound research practice.
● Is a requirement when you sign the
MOU between the post graduate
student and supervisor. (Form
ACA47a)
● Is a requirement of the UCT RDM
policy

  • 90. What is Research Data Management (RDM)? Data Source: Pomerantz, J. Metadata. The MIT Press, 2015 Research Data Management (RDM)is the care and maintenance of the data that is produced during the course of a research cycle. It is an integral part of the research process and helps to ensure that your data is properly organized, described, preserved, and shared
  • 92. Why Research Data Management (RDM)? Managing your data… ● is sound research practice. ● Is a requirement when you sign the MOU between the post graduate student and supervisor. (Form ACA47a) ● Is a requirement of the UCT RDM policy

Editor's Notes

  • #93: RDM is good research practice. Also a requirement when you sign the MOU
  • #94: Lifecycle phase Plan and Design Good management starts with a plan. A data management plan (DMP) is a formal document that outlines how research data will be managed during a research project as well as after the project is completed. Manage Store and Preserve Making sure that your data is securely available when you need it, now and into the future, is crucial to ensuring the success of your research project. Being able to find what you need and ensuring that it works requires a combination of tools and practices. Collaborate and Analyze In today’s networked world it is also common for the research to involve a team of people working together. Collaboration both expands the question set that can be asked of data as well as potentially augmenting the data used to answer a particular question. Share and Publish Publishing research data supports the continuation of relevant future research. For maximum impact, both research outputs and research data should be publicly available on an open-access platform. Such platforms allow research data to be discovered and cited.
